I would like to take this time to welcome
Marie-Nicole Ryan to Fallen Angel Reviews.
Marie, we are so glad to have you with us today.
Marie, I love your slogan, Believe the Dream, Beware the Danger. I must say your books really do grab the reader and hold them tighter than a roller coaster ride. I am not an ABC daytime fan much anymore, but I did read your blog. I agree about some of the things you expressed on it. Now let's talk about your latest soon to be released book,
One Too Many. This is mystery/suspense with a great plot to it. Just reading the blurb piqued my interest.
Thank you. I hope the blurb will pique everyone's interest. My slogan is sort of subtle, but I think it represents what I write whether it's romantic suspense or a mystery/suspense.
Why not let the readers in on this upcoming release?
One Too Many is the sequel to an earlier romantic suspense novel, Love On The Run. I had so much fun with the hero and heroine and her young son that I wanted to continue their story. David and Miranda (Randi) are on their honeymoon and she stumbles on the first body, an antiques dealer who dallied with one too many married women. Several more bodies follow and the danger heightens.
Are there any other WIP's or other upcoming releases you would like to tell us about today?
I also have a new romantic suspense releasing July 15 from Samhain. Holding Her Own is the story of two FBI agents who go undercover as newlyweds in New Orleans to investigate a money laundering operation in a big casino. She's a control freak and he's a bit of a rogue and used to running ops his way. However, this time she's in charge. Danger and a surprise or two make this one of my favorites. And it's pretty hot, too.
Do you have some upcoming chats or events scheduled that you would like to share with us?
Let's see-chat-wise, I'll be at Romance Junkies 9PM EST, June 2nd, and I'll definitely be dropping by the Samhain Chat night at Fallen Angel Reviews on June 5th, 9PM EST.
I'll be participating in this year's Lori Foster Reader/Author Get Together in Westchester, OH, June 6-8 at the Marriott North. The book signing is on Saturday, the 7th.
Do you think small press and e-books will be the wave of the future?
From your mouth to whatever deity's (your choice)ear. Yes, it's logical to accept that e-books are the wave of the future. I still read both paper and e-books because I still have a choice. I don't rhapsodize over the feel of the book or the smell of the paper like some do, and if you do that's fine, honestly. A book that transports me to another galaxy or another time period or contemporary city has done its job-no matter what format in which it's presented.
How do you feel about review rating systems?
I guess it depends on whether or not it's a good review. LOL. I just have to remind myself if it's not a favorable review that it's only one person's opinion which is also true with the most favorable ones as well. I think you have to have some kind of system to rate books as most other forms of artistic endeavor.
Was there any author or authors that helped you get your in start writing, or helped you break into the field?
Carol Buckland aka Carole Buck, a former Silhouette Desire author, gave me my first encouragement and my first in-depth critique of the first 175 pages of my first book. I was already a storyteller, but she helped me so much with the craft and "rules", I'm grateful to her to this day. Second would have to be all the great gals in Music City Romance Writers.
What made you choose the genres you write?
I've always loved romance and murder mysteries, so it was natural for me to combine them in some form or another. My heroine always gets her man and the villain gets his just desserts.
Can a workshop have a negative or a positive - or both - influence on how a person writes?
I suppose a workshop could have a negative influence on a writer, BUT I've never found one yet which affected me negatively. I took an online workshop from Margie Lawson in March. It was intense and exactly what I needed. I highly recommend her, but it comes with a warning that your brain might explode. ;-)
How do you feel while writing your books? Confident, self-confident, unsure, certain...?
All of the above. If I weren't confident, I'd never start a book and I'd never complete one either. Somewhere in the middle, I'm convinced each book is the book which will never see the light of day.
How do you feel when you type The End?
Jubilant! Even though I know that THE END is only the beginning. There are revisions ahead and revisions of the revisions. Once it goes to my editor, then I really feel great until I find out whether or not it's accepted. By the time I've been through my editor's edits, clean up and final line edits, I'm sick of it and wonder why on earth I write such long books.
Any advice for those planning on writing a book?
That's really difficult, since I consider myself a beginner in the field. However, RWAź has been of great value to me and many others. Learn to accept constructive criticism. Learn who you can trust to give constructive criticism. Consistency is the key to writing, meaning keeping the butt in the chair. Accept that it's a business and treat it as such. Be professional in your dealings with everyone along the way.
Why not share your myspace or website with us.
Sure thing. I love making new friends. www.myspace.com/marienicoleryan and http://marienicoleryan.com
Marie, I had the opportunity to work and live in Nashville for over a year, and I really loved it there. Do you ever use any of the backdrops of the area to work in some of your stories?
How nice of you to ask! Speaking of Nashville-I have a six book series planned and set in Nashville at a PI agency run by a blended family of six siblings. The first is almost through the third revision and ready to send to my editor.
Your editor calls and informs she needs you to give a dinner party for 60 guests as you get ready to discuss your latest release. You learn that a famous actor, singer, and author will be present at the gathering. What would you serve the guests at the dinner party? And who would you like for the three surprise guests to be?
First of all, a dinner party for sixty guests? Are you out of your freaking mind? Second, I would call my friend Harriett and ask her what the heck to do since I've never given a dinner party in my life. Party-yes, dinner party-no. I'm a writer, a person who's most comfortable with close friends and family, while Harriett can run a dinner party blindfolded and with both hands tied behind her. I would leave everything, including the menu, up to her. I figure my exalted guests would turn their noses up at pizza and Diet Coke.
As for my three surprise guests: Famous actor-Tom Selleck, Singer-Carole King, and Author Robert B. Parker.
What way do you prefer to travel, by boat, by plane, or by automobile?
Since I'm a control freak, the auto is my favorite mode of transportation. Boats are cool-must be because I'm a water sign. No airplanes-never. Never. Never.
Do you have a favorite item in your closet that you cannot bear to get rid of?
Yes, indeed I do. It's a slinky black cocktail dress, size five. I bought it in a consignment shop back when I could actuallydeed I do. It's a slinky black cocktail dress, size five. I bought it in a consignment shop back when I could actually wear a size five.
