Today we have the pleasure of speaking with
Delilah Devlin. Hello
Delilah and welcome to Fallen Angel Reviews.
Why not tell us a little something about
Delilah and how her day begins and ends?
Delilah rises fashionably late. Okay, I better not talk about myself in the third person or I'll begin to sound really pompous! I haul my butt out of bed around 8-ish, head to the computer and check my email and my blog, and then eat breakfast. As soon as I'm done, I'm back in the chair writing. During the warmer months, I break to swim mid-morning, go back to work until around 4:00 PM, break to swim again, and then catch up on promo activities until I watch some TIVO'd shows (bad Sci-Fi channel movies being my favorites, along with HOUSE, L&O: CRIMINAL INTENT, BONES, and EUREKA) and go to sleep. Now, that it's winter, I might squeeze myself once into my wetsuit to swim (the colder it gets the less attractive swimming becomes!).
Delilah, you have some hot and inviting stories that draw in the reader and often leave them breathless. Why not tell the readers about your upcoming book,
Down in Texas, and about the hunky men between the pages?
I adore my cowboys down in Honkytonk, Texas! Here's the blurb from the back cover of the book:
From erotica superstar Delilah Devlin comes a sizzling hot story about a little town in Texas called Honkytonk, where the women get exactly what they want…and the men know just how to give it to them.
Wearing His Brand
Lyssa McDonough just got tangled up in a coil of barbed wire, and her clothes are ripped to shreds. Rancher Brandon Tynan to the rescue-but why is she so ornery? Could it be that the whole state of Texas isn't big enough for the two of them? Hell, they'll still have to share one horse to get home, Lyssa better hang on tight-she's in for the wildest ride of her life…
Slow Ride
Maggie Dermott doesn't know the first thing about horses and Daniel Tynan is more than willing to show her the ropes. His gentle ways melt her heart and his sensual passion burns away her inhibitions. Daniel takes the time to love her right.
Straight Up Soldier
Suki Reece needs protection and she can see that Mac McDonough has the muscle. Too bad he can't stand taking orders from a woman. The rugged ex-Marine won't listen to a word she says until Suki distracts him with a sexy striptease. That gets his attention. Suki may have gotten the upper hand but Mac is going to be on top…
Can you tell us about any other upcoming releases or works in progress?
Better start a list. I've been a little busy…
1) On November 4th, Alluring Tales: Hot Holiday Nights comes out. I have a little contemporary western story in the anthology called "Indecent Exposure" that was a whole lot of fun to write!
2) Next year, I have several books coming out-
2/24/09 - TEXAS MEN (Kensington Aphrodisia)
3/01/09 - INVITE ME IN, Naughty Bits anthology (Harlequin Spice)
3/03/09 - OBSESSED, an Invitation Erotic Odyssey (Strebor Books)
6/23/09 - DARKNESS BURNING (Avon Red)
6/30/09 - HOTBLOODED, To Tempt a Cowboy anthology (Kensington Aphrodisia)
3) I'm currently working on a couple of things: the fourth book in the Dark Realm series and two stories for Ellora's Cave.
How do you keep your ideas fresh and imaginative?
My daydreams can't stay on the same old tired treadmill or I'd get bored dreaming. I refresh myself watching those really bad Sci-Fi channel movies, my collection of 50 Classic Horror Movies, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. And I'm always on the hunt for a new mythology/history book.
When you start your stories, do you go by an outline or just go with the flow?
When I sit down to write a new book, I have the opening of the story in my head. It rolls out like old movie reels. I just sit and type what I see. When I get past the opening, I hope the next scene's there as well, but sometimes, I have to doodle on a notebook and come up with a list of the twenty worst things that could happen to my hero and heroine before the idea solidifies.
As a reader, what is the craziest thing you've ever done to get your hands on or find time to finish reading a book?
I haven't done anything crazy to get a book, but once a long time ago, I was so completely consumed with the idea of getting "Immortal Beloved" (I'm a huge Beethoven fan-he rocked!) that my daughter and I made it a weekend's quest to hit every video store in Atlanta until we found a copy. We had it all mapped out and zoomed into parking lots like we were going to rob the places, brakes squealing at the front doors). Took us about four stops before we found one copy on the shelf (the movie wasn't that popular-go figure!).
If any famous person came to you and asked you to pen a romantic story about them, who would it be?
Russell Crowe and it would have to be an Outback story. Can't you see it? Woman stranded on that lonely stretch of highway, cowboy on horseback wearing a long leather duster, cowboy hat low over his eyes. She doesn't know if he's there to help her or ravish her…*sigh*
You are about to go on live radio to promote your next book, but the person doing the interview has fallen sick and they have phoned three people to come in and take their place, Howard Stern, Gene Simmons of Kiss, and Larry King. Of the three who do you choose to ask you the questions and why?
Gene Simmons, because he's just enough of a sick, kinky bastard to have a really good time talking about what I write. :D
Did you receive many rejections before you got your first contract?
Honey, I still get rejections. That doesn't stop until you're Nora Roberts!! I began writing in 2000, but didn't sell a thing until Spring 2003. I'll admit, I've sold most of what I've written since, but I never know when I send in a new proposal if it's what the editor wants.
Have you ever paid anyone for a professional critique of your work?
I did. Way back in 2001, I paid to have the first three chapters of a novel critiqued. I wanted to know what a professional really thought about my work rather than wait for a form letter rejection that didn't help me at all. The critique confirmed a lot of what I already knew-yeah, I write too hot for prime-time, and I really love the word "that." But the author who did it also had some really good suggestions for how to recraft the story into something saleable.
You have been asked to take care of a daycare center for an afternoon with a room of little ones. You can choose one super hero to help watch the children, who would be your super hero for the afternoon?
That question is too easy. It has to be Superman because he has the strength, speed and fortitude to corral the little hellions.
Of all the authors in the world, if you could only choose one to spend a day with you, which author would you choose?
Sherrilyn Kenyon. I can honestly say, I've never read her books. I'm afraid to, because I might start dreaming her stories and incorporate what I "see" into my own, but she's a master at self-promotion and I'd love to pick her brain.
Do you have something in your house or closet that you know you will never throw out?
My two-foot tall singing James Brown doll. When I'm feeling tired, all I have to do is hit the button and he starts dancing to "I feel good." Then the world is right.
What is the zaniest thing you have ever done in your life you will never forget?
I've done a lot of crazy-ass things in my life, but I'd have to say escaping Turkish white-slave kidnappers in Europe was probably one of the dumbest things.
Do you have a website other than
www.DelilahDevlin.com that you would like to share with your readers? Perhaps a blog or group, maybe even a Myspace?
If readers really want to get to know me and know what I'm working on, they have to visit my blog: www.delilahdevlin.com/blog.
Thank you so much for sharing time with us today,
Delilah. I look forward to your mouth-wateringly delightful stories.
