Hello,
Kim and welcome to Fallen Angel Reviews. It is good to have you with us this morning. We are anxious to hear about
Kim Dare, erotic romantic author. Please come in and grab a chair and have some ice tea.
Hi Linda, thanks for the welcome. Thanks for inviting me in. *Surreptitiously heats the tea up and adds a dash of milk - it maybe me August but it feels more like winter in the UK today, lol*
Tell us,
Kim, what is a typical day like for you once your alarm goes off?
I'm not what you'd call a morning person. So when the alarm goes off, I quite like to snuggle back under the covers and steal a few more minutes whenever possible.
I'm lucky enough that I can spend most of my time writing at the moment. I find it easier to write the later in the day it is, so I usually work on editing one story during the day and then switch to write the first draft of another story in the evenings.
Kim, you have some vibrant and refreshing covers. I like the way the artist did the cover for
Caught in the Middle, and
Imperial Topaz.
I've been so lucky with my cover art! Imperial Topaz is designed by Lyn Taylor. Caught in the Middle is by Natalie Winters. I'm also very partial to Eric from the cover of Turquoise and Leather, also by Lyn Taylor.
Kim loves to write about kink, love and happy endings. She allows the characters to live their 24/7 lifestyle or just open the toy box on weekends - whatever's right for them. The latest,
Friction, is no exception. We want to learn more about Andrew and Stephen, would you care to share?
Of course. The Friction Anthology has been a great project to work on. Andrew and Stephen were so much fun to write. Their story in the anthology is called Yes!
Andrew has a sort of split personality when it comes to men. On the one hand he's quick to take an interest in any hot single man who wants to play, but on the other hand, that all changes if the guy wants to play with leather.
Andrew has high standards when it comes to the dominants he offers his submission to - at the very least, they have to have a lot of experience with the lifestyle and be established masters on the local scene.
Both the characters have their own agendas - Andrew is determined to show that he has enough willpower to say no to Stephen for the duration of their bet.
And Stephen, well, he's nineteen years old and new to the leather scene, but he definitely has his own plans for his time with Andrew. There were times when he really shocked me (not to mention Andrew!) with the direction he took their story.
Wow, twenty books accepted by Total-e-Bound, congrats,
Kim. Would you give us a peek into your next stunning release?
Thanks Linda, it's been a really whirlwind year.
The new book out in September is part of the G-A-Y collection of Lust Bites. It's called Gay Until Graduation.
Spencer is bi, but when one of his friend's gets a girl pregnant and has to drop out of university to support his new family, Spencer decides he would be much better off sticking to men until he graduates - and to one man in particular. When Baxter finds out he's the man Spencer has decided to spend the next few months with, he knows it's going to be one hell of a ride!
This was another one that I had a great time writing. I do love watching characters move from being friends to being so much more than that.
How would you describe your writing space?
I'm really lucky to be able to have a writing room that I can retreat into when I need to concentrate. I'm working on a photo blog post of it at the moment, so you can have a sneak peek inside my writing space if you want to visit me over there.
Do you dive right into your characters and become a part of the story?
I do tend to fall into the trap of thinking about my characters as real people. I remember reading one particular review (from a different review site). It wasn't terrible, but there was one line in it that really wasn't pleasant reading.
My first thought was - what if Matt and Flynn read what she said about them? Flynn's going to be furious. Matt's going to be heart broken. Which is going to make Flynn even more furious and...
It was actually much easier to accept the review once I remembered the people I was so worried about don't actually exist!
What motivates you to write?
Characters turn up in my head and tell me their story so far. Some of them are funny, some of them are sad, but in all different ways the characters need someone to find them a happy ending. That's one of the things I really love about writing - you get to give happy endings to the people who really need them. If only it was so easy in real life!
What would you classify as your favorite part of writing?
I really enjoy the bits at the start and the end of a project.
I love the first rush you get when a character appears inside your head and the excitement of writing a first draft - sometimes it really is a case of writing as fast as you can because you want to know what happens next, and there's nothing that can beat the feeling of watching the characters come to life and a story take shape that way.
I've also grown to love giving a story its final polish, tweaking it and trying to make it the best story I possibly can. It's the bit in the middle where you find out that the only way to turn the first draft into a polished piece of work is to cut it to pieces and do major re-writes that is sometimes less than fun.
If you could be a character in any Disney Movie, which movie would you choose?
I've always quite liked Belle from Beauty and the Beast - although I remember when the film first came out I quite wanted to be Chip the tea-cup when I grew up.
What kind of avenues do you embrace to promote your books?
I have a blog and a website that I try to keep updated as much as possible. I also contribute to Total-e-bound's Hitting the Hotspot blog on the 27th of every month.
I try to attend author chats as often as possible and drop in to a few different yahoo groups whenever time allows. I've also dabbled in print ads. And, of course, submitting the books to review sites can bring wonderful results too!
What is your favorite dessert you can't live without?
I recently discovered that I'm allergic to chocolate - so definitely nothing with choc in it! Sponge pudding and custard is always a welcome treat.
What is your favorite city you love to visit?
It's a draw between London and Cardiff (the capital city of my home country, Wales).
I like London. I love the museums and the musicals in the West End. But at the same time, it's a bit too big, a bit too noisy - and I always try to pack so many things in to my visits so it's also far too tiring.
From that perspective Cardiff is smaller, calmer. It always seems so much more friendly than the bigger cities. Both are great in their own way.
If you could ask any President of the United States a question, what would it be?
It would probably be safer if I didn't have the chance to be honest. I might get myself into a lot of trouble if I got started with any politician!
Can you share with the readers, your website, myspace, and Facebook, please?
Of course! Website,
Blog.
