Today I am speaking with
Dahlia Rose. Good morning,
Dahlia, and welcome to Fallen Angel Reviews. Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule and sharing some time with us. Relax in our cozy chair, and have a glass of ice tea while the readers get to know a bit more about
Dahlia.
Good Morning Linda! Glad to be here, ice tea sounds good and you might get bored hearing about me. :)
When I stepped into your website I didn’t want to leave. I saw the lovely picture and thought wow, that would be nice now, away from all this crazy weather into something peaceful and tranquil. I love your photo on your Bio, too, you look comfortable and at ease. It is a peaceful setting.
LOL..Charlotte in the Spring is wonderful, it smells so wonderful and it reminds me of Barbados the island where Icome from. I moved her just for that reason and so my kids could grow up outside New York. I try to be comfort bale in any setting. I have moved around so much in my lifetime that I tend to be a chameleon in any area I live in.
Why not begin by telling us what a day is like for
Dahlia?
Lately with me being pregnant my day begins at 6 am I get the kids off to school and go back to sleep for a few hours. Those baby hormones can make me fall asleep at the drop of a hat. My day usually begins at 10 am or so with email and a cup of tea. I am the author Liaison at Amira Press as well as an author so I take care of business first before I even crack open my own work. I am usually working on at least 4 manuscripts at one time so which ever one pokes at me first they get worked on. My characters know I work on a first come first write basis. LOL
You are a busy writer, and have a number of titles out, congrats to you. The covers are all nice, too. In fact, I was spellbound by some of your book covers. Which book would you like to discuss with us today,
Dahlia? Or perhaps a mixture of your latest releases?
I really can't pick :) I'll go with a combination my last two releases were by far my favorite of 2008. The Darkest Joy dealt with Caim an angle who was punished for a crime in heaven and forced to serve a s the devil's bounty hunter in hell. He is such a sweet soul who is forced into a life he hates and all the underworld wants is him to become full demon. But he finds love in Bliss a phlebotomist in a small town. Together they fight the evils of hell so he can become human and they can have their happily ever after. it was met with great reviews and my readers loved it.
Melting a Frozen Heart was my Christmas release. It of course dealt with cranky Jack Frost who turned out to be a sexy as hell entrepreneur in New York City. What happen when Jack get a cold, well the weather tends to act up. He needs a little TLC and who give it to him but his assistant Lucy. Jack has a few things to work out and somehow his foot gets into his mouth and before he can make things right with Lucy he has to make it right within himself. It was a fun book for me to write for the holidays and I had a ton of positive feed back from my readers. Both books are available through Amira Press.
Do you have any WIP’s that you would like to discuss with us?
Oh I have a few, got an hour or so..LOL...I am working on three new WIP's as we speak. I want to get them all done by the end of March so I can take a bit of a hiatus for writing to spend time with our new addition.
But on to the books, "Love's Eternal Bite" will be an extended and updated version of an older book I wrote. I won't tell which one I am hoping the readers can guess.. :)
Flights of Fancy will be my contemporary erotic tale with the Amira Press Spring Anthology called Mating Season. Spring is the season for making whoopee and my characters will be doing just that. LOL. Let's just say my lead female character owns a very unusual bakery.
Dark Touch is my horror erotica which delves into my dark side. A demon escapes from hell with the intent of making heaven pay for not hearing her please when she was human. One lone woman who did not know that her destiny lies with angels and one man who loved her from the time he met her. With two friends, a witch and a priest they have to take on hell itself to save humanity. I just finished my fourth novel length book called
The Song of Calypso. It deals with my home of Barbados and a legend that belongs to the island. I mix in a two hot characters, Eve who is a sexy Caribbean woman and Caleb a fierce Scottish man who is sent to protect her. Together they brave the island and the deadly intent of a man who is trying to take Eve's heritage. You can find out about each of these books on my website or my myspace.
Do your characters ever wake you up in the middle of the night and insist you write?
Oh they try like the dickens to wake me up. But I have to set a schedule if not I would never sleep. I do keep a purple note pad next to my bed and every time they wake me up with some quirky comment or some sexy tale. I write it down for the next day. Just to keep them quiet of course… :)
What part of the book do you find most fascinating? The beginning, the middle or the ending?
The beginning of course. I love the creation of a new manuscript. My characters seem to come alive for me then. Their personality comes out and they talk to me as if they are right they saying "nope that's wrong" or "ok I can deal with that outfit." It’s like molding clay and creating a new sculpture each new piece speaks to you.
You are called upon, at a school, to tell those interested in becoming an author, all the ins and outs of good writing skills and getting published. Name three important elements in writing, publishing and promoting that you would give them.
Three important rules...Hmm let see.
1) Stick to your plot, it’s always good to have an outline of where you want your story to go.
2) I am always formal when it comes to submission, its good to be friendly yes but be professional
as well. A cover letter and synopsis will always give the publisher or managing editor a taste of what you have.
3) When it come to promotion don't get stuck in rut, the internet is a great tool for promotion and but not the only tool. Get out into your community and let people know you are the next big thing. Free bookmarks for coffee shops in your neighborhood. Book fairs, conventions and expos.
Anywhere they are willing to give you a space to say hey I am an author. Let hem see you shine.
Which time of the day is more productive for you, morning or night?
Morning is the best time for me, my mind is ticking and the energy is pulsing to me for get to work. I can write anywhere between 5- 10 K if I get into a good zone :)
What's important to you? Characters, plot, intimacy?
I would have to say all three. My characters make the book; I need for them to have an emotional connection. From their intimacy forms and the plot comes through. I like weaving everything together like a tapestry. Even my background characters need to connect in some way if not the book does not feel right to me.
You have a strong connection with your sister that is important; some can’t even get along with their siblings. If you were given a free vacation trip to, Africa, China or Hong Kong, and could bring your sister along, which place would you choose and why?
Oh we would definitely go to Hong Kong. The shopping there is awesome! LOL... Put us together and we can take that city and every bit of fashion by storm. She just got married on Valentine’s Day by the way and to her and her new hubby. CONGRATULATIONS!!
Name three things you look for in the other person.
Honesty, Trust and a sexy booty. (Can I mention sexy blue eyes?)
What three words describe you?
Eccentric, vibrant and a bit of a nut *big grin* I wear the badge proudly.
Do you have a favorite potato chip?
My favorite potato chip is Lays ranch with the ripples. That and their spinach dip are a pet vice of mine.
For your next works in progress, you are asked to rough it and live in a tent, would you do as your editor asked? And where would you set up your tent?
LOL..me and a tent..Goodness!! Ok I would have to say the woods in Alaska. I always wanted to see Alaska and after seeing the hunks in that show Men in Trees. I want to camp out with them.
Do you have a favorite comment or question from a reader?
I had one reader who asked me about my life outside writing. I am very open about my life and my fiancee Robert. I guess she liked what se read because she asked if he had a brother. He has two.
Who are some of your other favorite authors to read?
Charlaine Harris, Nora Roberts, P. C Cast, L. J Smith and Rachel Caine are just a few of the authors who fill my bookshelves.
Do you have a favorite movie that you never grow tired of?
I have two, Queen of the Damned and Armageddon. I can watch those over and over again. Stuart Townsend and Bruce Willis are at two different of the spectrum but in these movies both are sexy as hell.
