This morning I have the privilege of speaking to
Renee Reeves. Hello
Renee and welcome to Fallen Angel Reviews. Please come in and grab a cozy chair, and share some conversation with us.
Good Morning Renee, the readers are eager to hear about your latest release,
Night Angel. I love the title. Would you please enlighten us about the book?
Well, Night Angel came about while I was on vacation with my mother and husband in SC a few years. We had heard about a beautiful old church ruins not far from where we were so we headed off to find it. I'm so glad we did because it was absolutely beautiful! The roof was long gone but in its place was a canopy of trailing vines and huge overhanging limbs. The place was so peaceful that scenes just started popping into my head. I knew then that I wanted to do a story about a woman who had experienced some type of trauma and needed a place to rest and heal. Also, because of my love for horses, I knew I wanted to somehow have abused horses in the storyline as well and that's when the idea for Nick's sanctuary (and his own past) came about. I then changed the location from SC to Montana and the setting from a church ruin in the woods to the isolated stream on Nick's land.
I had a little trouble picking a title (as I always do) but decided on Night Angel because when Nick first spots Morgan she is sitting by his stream with nothing but the moonlight spotlighting her, which entrances him. So, in a nutshell that's how Night Angel developed.
Where did you get the idea for the character of Nick and Morgan? The storyline between the two sounds awesome.
I have always loved stories where the heroine is hurt in some way and needs the hero's help to heal, so Morgan was pretty simple to create. Nick, on the other hand, was a bit more difficult. I wanted him to be...imposing to people at first glance, secretive, and to also have come from a difficult past just to show that you can't always judge people by their looks or demeanor. Then I went a bit further and gave him a childhood that was so horrific he had no choice but to do what he did (no, I am not going to tell!) and which led to his time in prison, and then labeled with 'ex-con' for the rest of his life. Nick was a man I wanted to be extremely male, but at the same time have some very deep insecurities that only one special heroine could help him deal with.
When you start to write, do you outline, or just go with the flow?
When I first start I jot down my ideas as they come into my head, but I don't outline. I tried it thinking that that's what all the professional writers do, but just could not keep it organized. I guess I would call myself a 'go-with-the-flow' type writer. I changed the storyline for Night Angel around so often during it's creation that at times I had myself thoroughly confused! But, in the end and with help from my great editor Laurie Sanders, it all came together.
I believe you are presently working on two paranormals. Would you care to share with us what they will be about?
I was working on two werewolf/vampire stories, and also pondering a story about Jake, Nick's brother from Night Angel, but since my mothers passing I've found it hard to find my 'writing zone' again and haven't worked on any of these recently. I guess I really just need to sit down and start typing on one of them and hope that a flow will develop.
What book have you read that left a strong impression you will never forget?
A Rose in Winter by Kathleen Woodiwiss simply because it was the first romance novel I ever read and hooked me, making me the romance addict that I am today. It also made me fall in love with not only the dark, brooding type heroes, but the Beauty and the Beast type storyline too.
What were you doing when you got
the call that your story was accepted?
It was actually through email so I must have been checking that. :-) But it was a pretty exciting moment, especially after having been rejected so many times. I don't care how tough a person is, rejection is hard to take, especially when it's something that you've worked hard on such as with writing a book.
How much of your personality and life experiences are in your writing?
I'd say a lot, especially the horse parts. Several of the horses I've owned throughout my life have been abuse and neglect cases, so I put a lot of that into Nick's horse stories that he shares with Morgan. I do have a quiet, loner type personality and I projected that into Morgan a bit. I don't have any experience with ex-cons so that side of Nick I had to research a little, but for the most part I just made him out of what I like in a man and what I thought a good hero for Morgan would be.
You and I share almost the same movies and television shows. If you were chosen to be cast in any of the movies or shows you watch, which one would you choose?
I would have to choose Dear Frankie. It is just such a simple, touching movie about a woman desperate to escape her past and keep her child safe, while possibly finding unexpected love along the way. Plus, I love Scotland and have always wanted to go there and I love Gerard Butler. The way he looks at the heroine when they are dancing…ohhh, it's the way every woman dreams of being looked at by a man!
Can you give us your website, myspace, or Facebook, as well as the links that we can find out about your books?

My MySpace page. I can be found on Facebook under the name Michelle Renee Hiller Reeves, and I also am on Authors Den.
My publisher's website is Black Velvet Seductions and allows those interested to download three sample chapters for free.
What five words describe you?
Quiet, emotional, artistic, lonely, sentimental
Finish the sentence: Life is short, so…?
Do what you love, say what you mean, try to treat people as you want to be treated, and always tell the people you love how much you care about them because one day it could be too late.
What is your favorite city you love to visit?
Savannah, GA. It's the last place I was able to take my mother to on vacation and she and I both loved it.
With your love for horses, is there a movie involving horses that you could watch again and again?
Oh yes! The Black Stallion and The Man From Snowy River. Both are wonderful and always make me want to get out and ride!
You have just won a cruise to anywhere you would like to travel, and you can take twenty of your friends and family with you. Where would you plan your adventure cruise?
Well, if it's anywhere then I would like to cruise around Alaska for awhile and then end up in Scotland for several weeks of non-stop exploring. Of course, there is the danger that I would never want to leave! :-)
Thank you so much for sharing time with us,
Renee. It has been a pleasure and I wish you success with your writing.
