Kris Cook Interview
Today we have the pleasure of speaking with romance author, Kris Cook. Hi and welcome to Fallen Angel Reviews! It is great to have you with us. The readers are anxious to learn something about Kris.
Kris, let me first say Happy Birthday, September 14th, your lucky day. I hope you have a great day and all your wishes come true that day and always.
Thank you. It's been a good year.
We would love to hear something about Kris. How does your day begin?
Coffee, two cups with cream. I'm not human until then. After that, I read and respond to emails.
Why don’t we discuss your latest release, Perfection, Eternally Three, Book 1? What was the energy in composing this book, any special idea or something that just popped into your head?
I'm a fan of paranormal romance books: J R Ward, Kresley Cole, Gena Showalter, Lora Leigh, Sheryilyn Kenyon, Shayla Black, and more. I'd always wanted to write a paranormal romance. Awhile back at lunch with Shayla Black, I mentioned an idea I had about immortals needing energy from humans with the transfer being similar to the laws of electricity - positive, negative, and conduit. Over the following weeks and months, I fleshed out the idea, and the world of Eternally Three evolved into what it is today: a sensual place of angels and demons, jinn and ifrit, and humans.
Why not tell us a bit about Micki Langley and her story?
Micki is a woman who doesn't realize how sexy she is, and that makes her all the more alluring. But what appeals to me about her, is the depth of kindness and goodness she possesses. Though she's plunged into an unfamiliar and dangerous situation, her love and concern for her brother keeps her moving forward. With the help of Jared, the disgraced jinn, and Bradley, the warrior angel, she overcomes the evil stalking her but also the fear that has held her back her entire life, awakening a sensuality inside her she'd never known existed and the ability to give her heart to these two heroes.
What can we expect from you in the future?
Siren will be releasing my book, THREE TO PLAY this winter. It's a departure from the paranormal world of Eternally Three, but a nod to another career I enjoyed a few years back in radio broadcasting. I'm currently finishing up CAPTIVATION, the second book in the Eternally Three series. I am so excited about where this book takes the series and what new things are revealed.
Besides writing, what else does Kris enjoy doing?
Music is a big part of my life. It's genetic. My grandparents actually were musicians. I go to several concerts every year. My taste run wide, from Korn to Lady Gaga. I also enjoy traveling, the outdoors, a good meal, theatre, wine.
Have you ever written a screenplay or thought of doing one?
I have. Actually, I began my writing career with my sister. We wrote plays and screenplays together, and we won a few contests. We were lucky to have one of our plays produced. We also wrote a screenplay for a short that was filmed and made it to film festivals.
My sister passed away from cancer in 2003 at the age of forty. As her older brother, losing her was the hardest thing I've ever faced. I miss her very much. Since her passing, I've stepped away from writing screenplays and plays. Someday, I may try again, but now, I'm really enjoying writing romance novels.
Do you have to go through many drafts/edits to get it polished just right?
I do. As a writer, it is all about choices. First, what's the big story question, twist, unique point? Second, who are the people that populate the story? Third, where are they? And so on... Later, as I get more words on the page the questions become much more specific, and at times difficult. Can I cut this paragraph? Is there a better way to say this piece of dialog? Do I really need it or would a gesture suffice? What's a better adjective here?
Language is the vehicle of any written work. As the writer/driver, my job is to convey the story so that the reader can enjoy the journey.
Once your story is finished and you type, The End, do you miss your characters or do they still play loudly in your head?
That's a great question. Yes and no. Since I'm writing romance, my characters get their happily-ever-after. There is a sense of satisfaction knowing that they will continue on together. Do they sometimes show up and say a word or two? Sure. But they were so happy when I last left them that any new issues aren't so overwhelming. Since Eternally Three is a series, I do get to bring back the characters to check in on them and learn what's going on in their lives. The first triad, (Micki, Jared and Bradley) continue to play an important role in upcoming books in the series.
Is there a book you have read that left a strong impression you will never forget?
JR Ward's Lover Awakened. Zsadist's story amazed me. To overcome such a horrific past (I won't spoil it for the few that haven't read it) and to embrace love with Bella is probably one of the most compelling stories I've ever read. Definitely on my Keeper Shelf.
We are slowly coming to the end of this year. Do you feel that you have accomplished what you set out to get done this year?
I have, but I'm never totally satisfied. I wish I had more hours in the day as I have so many books that I want to work on. I've got a Vampire story that keeps whirling around in my head, but the schedule won't let me touch it until sometime next year.
For your next works in progress, you are asked to rough it and live in a tent, would you do as your editor asked? And where would you set up your tent?
Yes. My editor at Siren helped me to see PERFECTION in a different way, challenging me to make it better. Where would I pitch the tent? Being a nut for sun and water, I'd want to work near a beach.
If you could be on a deserted island for a weekend with anyone, who would you take with you?
It may sound strange, but I would want that person to be JK Rowling. I love her series. Plus, she got children reading again, and I'd like to learn as much as I could from her.
Do you have a website that you would like to share with your readers? Myspace, Facebook, or Twitter?
Of course.
Website,
MySpace,
Twitter,
Facebook,
Email
Thank you, Kris, for spending time with us. It has been a delight and I wish you the best with your writing.
