Marissa Chenery Interview

I’m joined in the Fallen Angel Reviews lounge today by Marisa Chenery. Welcome Marisa, and thank you for agreeing to join me for a chat.

Have you always wanted to be a writer?

Pretty much. I was 16 when I began to write. I started writing a book at that time, but never finished it. It wasn’t until I was in my late 20s that I started writing again.

Do you have a favourite place to write?

Yes, I do. With four kids and a husband around, I find they can be a bit distracting at times. When I write, I usually go up to my bedroom to be alone.

What books influenced you when you were growing up?

I read a lot when I was younger. The books I remember most are Judy Blume’s. I read a few of her young adult, and when I got older one of her adult books.

Can you give us a brief outline of the Wulf’s Den series?

Wulf’s Den is a nightclub owned by Beowulf, who is the Hero from the first book in the series called Beowulf and Roxie. The series is about werewolves who find their mates, who also happen to be mortals. How they meet and eventually become mates can be a lot of fun. Throw in a bit of humor with some hot love scenes then you have the Wulf’s Den series.

What is your favourite book? (by another author)

Oh, I have so many that I don’t just have one. I do have favourite authors, though. They are Karen Marie Moning, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Mary Janice Davidson and Christine Feehan, just to name a few.

What is your writing process?

I write more by the seat of my pants than planning out the whole book out before I start writing. I will come up with a small less than one page outline where I describe the Hero and Heroine and how I want their story to go, but that’s about it.

Can you tell us a little about your up and coming works?

My next book at Liquid Silver Books should be released sometime this November. It’s the first book in my new werewolf series called Roxie’s Protectors-Roans’ Fall. It’s a spin off series from Wulf’s Den with some of the characters from that series moving over to the new one. I plan to write another five books for Roxie’s Protectors in the future.

What would you like to accomplish with your writing?

I hope to be able to continue to write books that readers enjoy as much as I enjoy writing them. And hopefully leave readers asking for more.

Do you have any special rituals to help you get in the mood to write?

I actually have one thing I do when I write—I listen to movie scores on my MP3 player. No words, just the music. It helps me focus, and drown out any excess noise in the house.

Do you have any bad writing habits?

Not really, unless you count having to write everyday until the book is finished. I don’t like to leave anything hanging.

What was the first story you ever wrote?

My first book was Lady Knight, which is now published at Siren Publishing. I wrote it almost 13 years ago. I handwrote entirely in coil notebooks then typed it up on my computer when I finished. It took me 12 years to see it published.

Do you have a favourite movie you watch over and over again?

I actually have more than one, but my all time favourite is A Knight’s Tale. I love Heath Ledger.

What is your revision process like?

I don’t usually do a lot of revisions on my books. I basically do a full read through, checking for grammar, spelling and typos. If a sentence doesn’t work, I’ll rework it. Nothing really major.

Did you enjoy writing some of your novels more than others?

I have to say I’ve enjoyed writing my werewolf series the best. I can have a lot of fun with them.
