Nikki Duncan Interview

Hello Nikki and welcome to Fallen Angel Reviews. It is good to have you with us this morning. We are anxious to hear about Nikki Duncan and her books.

Nikki, why not grab a seat and relax. The readers would like to know what a day is like for Naughty Nikki, once she wakes every morning. Hope you don't mind me calling you that, I read that was your nickname, and am anxious to hear more.

LOL, I've gotten used to the name. As for my days, they're often kicked off with a round of chaos from the children and new puppy. Hubby (aka CIS) gets in the middle sometimes and rather than calming things down can do a pretty good job of riling them up. Finally, when the kids are at school and CIS at work, I get to o my exercising and then get busy with my day job. (I'm lucky enough to work from home, which gives me a flexible schedule for the kids.) After doing the day job duties and afternoon school runs, I settle in to write. If I'm lucky I wrap that up around 9:00, but it's rare that I'm lucky. I pull a lot of really late if not all-nighters.

Why not tell us about your newest release today, Sounds To Die By?

*sigh* I loved, absolutely loved, writing this book. It didn't start out as my idea, but it resonated with me and I had a blast with it. It actually started one night while sitting around talking and Crissy, Samhain's owner, commented that she wanted a blind hero who wasn't angsty about being blind and was maybe a listener for the CIA or something. Ian was born on the 16-hour car ride home and matured during a brainstorming session. Kieralyn just sort of appeared; ready to tackle whatever I threw at her - and Ian.

The Blurb:

Rookie FBI Agent Kieralyn Beckett is in a delicate position. Her team refuses to buy into her theory that a string of kidnappings is connected. If she pushes too hard, they'll discover the latest victim was her college roommate and boot her off the case. A garbled recording is the only evidence, and there's only one man who can decipher it. The hard part will be convincing him to take the case.

Blinded as a child, NSA "listener" Ian Cabrera spends the majority of his time analyzing data while secretly searching for his father, a missing CIA operative. His plate is full, but Kieralyn's passion and determination, as well as the erotic beat of her heart, spark his interest. So does the mention of his father's code name on her recording.

There's only one way to follow this new crumb-trail of clues without tipping her off about what he's really after. Convince her she needs him to be her undercover partner, despite his handicap. Between her eyes and his ears, they make one beautifully orchestrated team. Every time they touch, though, the arousal they generate creates one red-hot element of distraction...

You have another release, Scent of Persuasion. Can you tell us a little about this one, too?

Scent of Persuasion is book 2 in the Sensory Ops Series. (Sounds to Die By was Book 1) I seem to tackle a complicated plot I every story, and this one was no different. I used DNA based perfume as my murder weapon of choice and call-girls as the delivery. To make it even more fun, my heroine is loosely based on a great friend of mine. Her spirit and generosity and all the things that make her great - not the call-girl part. ;)

The (unofficial) Blurb:

Actress Kami Evans is tackling the biggest role of her life-as an escort. There's definitely something going on in Madame V's mansion, but Kami has to prove herself trustworthy before she can dig deeper and prove her stepbrother didn't commit suicide.

Her first assignment: seduce a CEO and, oddly, steal his hair brush. He's everything she avoids in a man: Suave, sexy, suited. She plays her role all the way to the bedroom...and finds it stunningly difficult to walk away.

Breck Lawson's undercover assignment, posing as a replacement CEO, is yielding zero clues as to why his friend tried to kill himself-until Kami comes on the scene. She's everything he likes in a woman: Safe, sexy, temporary. She also arouses him just by walking into a room, a sure sign it's time to push her away.

Then he connects the dots she unwittingly shares, and realizes their investigations are linked by delicate strands of DNA. Keeping her near isn't wise, but he has to know her secrets and keep her safe.

Unless they trust each other and come clean, those dots could lead to death for one, or both, of them...

How would you describe your writing space?

Obsessively organized, at least most of the time. I need the distraction of papers needing attention out of my way before I can be creative, so I keep a tidy desk. But there are also things that keep me motivated. Like pictures of my kids, a stuffed lab (Ian's dog), a shot glass almost filled with colorful beads (a writing incentive thing from a writing group I'm in), a framed copy of the Sounds to Die By cover (Scent of Persuasion will be joining that one soon) and small lamps. Then there are the post it notes and colorful pens I use when I plot or edit on paper and the lamps I use to set a calmer mood than the overhead light. Oh, and I'm in the back of the house away from most of the distractions.

Do you dive right into your characters and become a part of the story?

Most of the time. Sometimes I have to really work at getting to know them while others they're just there and easy to work with. In the end I know them all very well.

When you are not composing, how do you spend your time?

Depends. I read or watch movies/TV. I enjoy cooking, but more often than not this falls to CIS, and occasionally I will go pull weeds in the backyard. I do spend a fair amount of time keeping the house as obsessively organized as my office, because with me out of sight is not out of mind. I also love to hang out with friends and go to monthly writer meetings. They give me the chance to get out of my introverted shell and be around other adults. Without them, I would quite naturally spend all of my time alone with the voices in my head.

What would you classify as your favorite part of writing?

Hmm. That one's tough. I think it varies from each book. Sometimes it's the beginning. Sometimes it's the end. Sometimes it's the entire journey. I guess overall I would say the sense of accomplishment that comes from finishing another story.

Once your story is finished and you type, The End, do you miss your characters or do they still play loudly in your head?

Ha. I cheat. I write series so that I get to keep playing with them. I love my characters and they live in my head constantly.

Do you have a particular character that you wish you could write about again?

Who would I like to write about again? So far I think that would be Dr. H from my current WIP that will hopefully be book 3 in the Sensory Ops series. I have finished the first draft of his story, and I've only just scratched the surface with him. He'll have to make some appearances in the rest of the series.

What is the hardest part of writing and the easiest for you?

Hardest: Tying all of the loose ends together in a pretty bow, or finding the perfect way to string the words together to deliver the emotions I want. Easiest: Brainstorming and plotting all of the possibilities to narrow down what will really happen. I love that part.

Do you have any unfinished projects sitting around?

Oh yeah. I have a 4 book detective series waiting for attention. Books 1 and 2 are roughly written. Books 3 and 4 are knocking around in my head. I also have a paranormal suspense series kicking around. The first book of that is written, while the second is waiting for me to stop being afraid of the plot. It's a big, tough, challenging monster. But I love it, so it will be written.

What is your favorite dessert you can't live without?

Is it weird that I don't have one? I love so many sweets.

What is your favorite city you love to visit?

I haven't traveled much, but I'm going to go with Breckenidge, CO. I loved that place.

Do you have any secret indulgences that you enjoy?

Long bubble baths with only a book to pay attention to.

Nikki, thanks so much for sharing time with us today. It has been a delight and I wish you the very best in all your hard work.

Thanks for having me. It's been a blast!
