Hot Toddy #7 Blood and Soul: Nutcracker is a short story that focuses on the love forsaken by Onan for Elizabeth. Years ago, his vampire prodigy betrayed not only his trust but the essence of the love they shared. Every Christmas for two hundred years Elizabeth has tried to make amends, to apologize for her misdeed. This Christmas she intends to deliver Onan’s present and her apology in person. Will Onan be willing to finally forgive her, or will this be the impetus he needs to cast Elizabeth permanently from his life.

In less than twenty pages the author has managed to bring readers into the lives of Onan and Elizabeth. An in depth history of the characters is not offered, nor needed, as the author builds to their impending encounter. The few descriptions of the past lend credence to sense of loss Onan and Elizabeth feel, and show why both are hesitant about a Christmas Eve meeting. The subsequent scenes are consistent with the characters Ms. Hill has created. The remorse Elizabeth feels is evident, as is the hurt Onan feels, but most apparent is the desire that still lingers between them. As they try to understand the past and decide on a future, readers will be treated to a heated encounter that reinforces the depth of their love.
