Saving Grace
Nicole White brings readers a story that possesses a strong heroine that has never asked for help, but in learning to accept assistance, Grace may save more than just her life.
When a heroin addict walks into his precinct asking him to save a woman named Grace, Detective Derek Holden thinks that her story is a fabrication brought on by drugs and desperation. However, when she is discovered dead a short time later, Derek looks a little deeper and decides that perhaps there is more to her story than imagination. He sets out to find Grace Wesley and save her from the danger that is closing in around her. The ensuing weeks are filled with intrigue, danger, and a woman that will forever change his life.
Nicole White propels the reader into the action immediately. The initial scenes ensure that readers will keep reading to see how the past impacts the present. The story focuses predominately on the quest Grace and Derek undertake. As Grace sets out to finish what was started, the plot has many twists and turns. The reader is never sure where the story will go next. The race away from danger was at times palpable. As a reader, I knew that Derek and Grace were interacting with a multitude of people and situations, yet the author maintained a feel for the isolation that surrounded them. In a world full of people, they truly seemed to be alone in their struggle. While Grace and Derek attempt to reach their goal, readers are aware that they are being stalked by a killer. At the same time they are racing across the country, Grace and Derek discover an unparalleled and unwanted depth of emotion. However, the past makes both characters leery, while the present casts doub!
ts that they will even have a future.
The secondary characters are used to add background and depth and serve as a catalyst for a variety of emotions for the main characters. However, in this reader’s opinion, Grace is the character that lights up the pages. Grace’s character possesses many facets. Readers will get to see her as not only a warrior and survivor, but also as a woman and daughter that wishes for a normal existence. The author has crafted her with ingenuity and bravery that is at odds with how little she actually values herself. The fact that Derek sees beyond the obvious to the woman beneath will endear him to readers and show why Grace finds it easy to care about him. Their quest is not an easy one, nor is the emotion that develops between them. I appreciate how Nicole White stayed true to the personalities she crafted throughout the rest of the story and finished this tale with as much style and emotion as it began.
