We begin our story surrounded by loved ones who are mourning the passing of Esther Jo Elrod, local Wicca. Cassie and Anna, Esther’s granddaughters, reminisce about the story that began long before, fifty years ago in fact.

Esther is a young Wicca growing up in Providence, Florida, a haven for those who loved the simple, natural way of life. However, Esther is an unwelcome addition to Providence, for her views of life and religion makes her an outcast of sorts. Love is no respecter of religion, and Esther falls in love with a local boy Jimmy Elrod.

There are complications; however, Jimmy is not comfortable in his relationship with Esther because of her beliefs, and because he is engaged to another woman. Their love grows however, and an erotic and tempestuous relationship is begun with a ramshackle cabin in the woods. There love was so strong, it left its mark within the very wood upon which they lay, a perfect silhouette of Esther, placed there by the sweat of their passion.

Despite their love, Esther decides to leave Jimmy and Providence. She doesn’t wish to break up Jimmy and his fiancée Laney, she knows that she can’t compete with Laney, nor can she overcome the differences between herself and Jimmy.

Esther returns to Providence and brings with her a surprise for Jimmy, a child. Esther, loving her child more than herself, gives the child up to Jimmy and Laney, knowing that they can raise her and give the child more than she could.

Morgana MacArthur weaves a tale of love, life and happiness, which brought tears to my eyes. She gives us a heartwarming story, brimming with the true meaning of love, a love that is found, not just within us, but which can be found when we give of ourselves to others.
