The Search
Having just ended her engagement, Assistant District Attorney Sydney Cooper wants to finish up this case so she can start her 2-week vacation in Cancun. All she has left to do is pack and she is ready for some fun in the sun; but a phone call from her best friend Lilly changes all that. It isn’t unheard of for Lilly to call at the last minute needing this or needing that. The two girls have been inseparable since grade school, so when one of them is in need; the other doesn’t hesitate to answer. As Sydney arrives to meet with Lilly, two men in a van grab Lilly and take off. Just like that, her best friend is gone, kidnapped right in front of her face.
Jake Sloan has been looking forward to a few weeks of R&R when suddenly there’s an FBI agent wanting to speak with him. Not only does the agent want to speak to him, but apparently the FBI has the idea that Jake can somehow help them out. The agent mentions an old acquaintance and Jake is interested, but not enough to agree. That is until the agent mentions just what his old “friend” has been up to lately. Always a patriot at heart, Jake agrees to see what he can find out.
As part of the deal with the FBI, Jake becomes Sydney’s new neighbor and they quickly become friends. As the danger around them intensifies, so do their feelings for one another.
The pressure mounts when Jake asks an old friend for some information and he turns up dead a few days later. Her boss has told Sydney to cease a certain direction of her investigation or it’ll cost them both their jobs. A second random note for Lilly has been sent to her mother and she doesn’t have all the money. All of these things lead Sydney to ask for help from the one person that could very well cost her her life.
I haven’t read a book by Christiane Heggan before and The Search successfully surprised me. The plot was very well developed and there were plenty of characters. Not so many as to confuse the reader but enough to round out the story. Readers will be intrigued by the suspense in the story but it’s the pairing of Jake and Sydney that will keep them reading. Ms. Heggan has given readers a very down to earth hero and heroine in a situation that isn’t all that far-fetched. Who wouldn’t do everything in their power to save a friend from harm and likewise who in this day and age wouldn’t lend a helping hand in the name of patriotism? The passionate motivation of both these characters makes The Search all the more satisfying to read. I highly recommend Christiane Heggan and The Search for all to sample. 5 Angels!
