Baer and the Three Goldilocks
This is no children’s fairy tale. The story begins with a princess telling a story, set in a far away place called America. This is the story of Susan Baer and her three handsome Goldilocks. Can she find a man who is just right?
Susan Baer is a confident, successful businesswoman. She is sole owner of Baer Hugs, a health club that caters exclusively to women. So why is it that she gets giggly and breathless whenever she’s near her newest administrative assistant? Because he’s gorgeous, of course. His stunning good looks aside, Duncan makes her feel at ease. His being gay was the deciding factor for Susan when she decided to hire him. She has been burned too many times by the problems that arise when placing a straight man in an all female environment. After a few weeks working with him Susan finds she lusts after the very man she can’t have.
Candidate One: Duncan has to watch his step. The stroke of genius that landed him the job at Baer Hugs, posing as a gay male, would not hold water much longer if he can’t keep his urges under control when around Susan. During the interview, a subtle hint from Susan made him think that he would have a better chance at the job if he were gay. So here he is, not supposed to like women, and lusting after his boss. Duncan is a private investigator searching for information on one of the employees at Baer hugs. Unfortunately he needs to be on site to be sure he gathers the correct information.
Candidate Two: Toby is a complete ass. His custom suits and designer pinkie rings are just one of the many clues to his ‘holier than thou’ disposition. Snide remarks and cutting comments are all that he seems to offer Susan, yet he has been in her life for quite some time.
Candidate Three: Bill Wyeth, owner of Wyeth Construction, won the contract for the building of Susan’s newest branch of Baer Hugs. Tanned and fit, he is a hands-on type man. When Susan and Duncan travel to the build site to see why there have been so many delays in construction, it’s all Duncan can do not to growl as Bill charms Susan.
This book is one hilarious moment after another. Watching Duncan wade through the estrogen charged chats sessions with his female co-workers, and dodge answers to questions he had no idea how to answer had me laughing out loud. Baer and the Three Goldilocks is a funny adult twist on a beloved fairy tale. I enjoyed the fact that Susan’s character was so human. Difficult teen years added a layer of insecurity underneath her confident business persona. This, to me, made her seem real. Duncan is luscious. He is tall, broad, blonde, handsome and, thanks to his undercover identity, sensitive. Watching him all but beating his chest around Susan will have you in tears, from laughing so hard. Ms. Knight deserves a pat on the back for this lovely adult bedtime story. Her idea was fresh, and her writing is witty. I devoured Baer and the Three Goldilocks in a matter of hours; and am now on the hunt for more from the magical pen of Dee S. Knight.
