At Her Service
Lady Joanna of Lynwood Manor has a major problem and a host of minor ones.
She is a widow with a young daughter in medieval England trying to rule her keep without EVER marrying again. She’s got at least two suitors she can’t stand, there is never enough money to go around, and her village is being menaced by a group of thieves. What’s a gently-bred lady to do?
Enter disillusioned mercenary Logan Grimm. Despite the fact that the villagers consider him the lowest of low, Logan is a man with enough skill to protect Lynwood and enough honor to regret his checkered past. Lynwood’s captain-at-arms finds him drowning his sorrows in a London taproom and makes him an incredible offer. And herein lies another problem - Logan won’t work for a woman, thanks to a previous experience.
So begins a delightful story of opposites attracting, puzzling mystery, and finding love where you least expect it. Anton’s characters are rich, believable, and utterly likeable. Joanna is a strong woman plunging her way through learning how to make her way in a man’s world, and learning how to trust again after her husband’s unspeakable betrayal. Logan appears to be a tough, don’t-mess-with-me bloodthirsty savage, but Joanna soon finds herself attracted to him deeply.
It is always refreshing to read about a strong female character that refuses to bend to the dictates of her era. Joanna is one such lady. She is tender and tough; she is lady-like without being wimpy; she is uncertain of what to do next and decisive at the same time. I loved getting to know her and finding out what makes her tick.
