Elementals - Fire and Ice

This book is second in a series, but does not need to be read in order.

Staring into the flames, Trina, slave to Kalidah and known as Baraka of the North, finds herself in the realm of the fire spirits. Dancing amongst the flames with the spirits, she is warm for the first time this winter. Rudely pulled from this wondrous place, she is summoned to town by her owner, the mage Kalidah. Confused by the almost caring gestures Kalidah is making towards her, Trina is wary and quiet. While in town, a strange encounter with a white-haired man makes her even more uneasy. Upon return to their home, Trina draws water for a ritual and is interrupted by Fletcher, Kalidah’s mistress’ servant. Trina meets Kalidah’s mistress for the first time and is drugged. An unwilling participant in the ritual, Trina can only watch as Kalidah summons a demon and things go wrong.

Trina wakes up unharmed and in a man’s arms. Not a man, but the embodiment of the fire spirit that Kalidah had summoned. Finding that she is now free of Kalidah, Trina decides to find out if she can discover where she came from. Brand, the fire spirit, follows her and keeps her safe. Can they discover who she is and can they stay together?

I enjoyed the relationship between Brand and Trina. It was great reading about Brand’s different discoveries, like how mustard tastes and the difference between mustard and honey. The main character from the first book, Small Magick, is mentioned in this book, but you do not need to read the first book to enjoythe story. Ms Midnight crafted a fabulous world for her characters to live in, I look forward to reading more in the series.
