A Shortcut Through The Shadows

I was a little hazy on what exactly a “cozy mystery” was, until I popped the seal on this little beauty. A cozy is a novel that you would have a warm cup of tea, a blanket and snuggle in for the night and read. A Shortcut Through The Shadows definitely lives up to that classification. I was surprised to find the hours of the night whipping past.

This award winning novel brings the reader into the peaceful living of Foxglove Corners (Bodoin has several novels set in this quaint community). The heroine of this series, Jennet Greenway, lives a simple life, or so it seems at first glance. Her green home on Jonquil Lane is a sanctuary in the beautiful lands of northern Michigan.

A Shortcut Through The Shadows is a twisted tale of intrigue. Jennet’s rescue collie becomes the town celebrity after saving a drowning child. A stranger offers her $1000 for the dog. Through she has many dogs, this is an unacceptable proposition. Her dogs are family. Another man steps forward claiming the dog belongs to his sister. Confused, Jennet determines to uncover the truth of who Winter (the dog) truly belongs to. On an excursion, she and her dogs find a dead woman buried in the woods. Her investigation and search disrupt the killer’s plan and mystery ensues.

This is a fairly quick read with a different bent than I have most often found myself reading for pleasure. I greatly enjoyed Jennet’s interaction with her dogs. Coming from a family of pet lovers, this struck a chord with me. If you are looking for a cozy, this is a great addition to your library. If, like me, you have not ventured into the category before, now is the time and the Foxglove Series is a great place to start.
