Flesh and the Devil

Brenden is a cop at the end of his rope. On probation for his alcoholism and blatant disregard for the law, he knows that his job is at stake if he can’t get himself together. Yet he doesn’t have much going on for him in life right now. When he’s put on the case of checking out a escort service that might be giving out more than companionship, Brenden becomes obsessed with the beautiful owner, Líadán. As he explores Líadán’s world, he learns that creatures of the night take various forms, haunting and helping those seeking release from their existence. However when bodies are found mirroring Líadán’s practices, Brenden has to decide whether he can objectively perform his duty even as he’s losing his heart.

Flesh and the Devil is a dark, erotic, paranormal story sure to satiate those who like a little bite with their romance. While at the beginning of the story I wasn’t too beholden with the hero, I found him a loser and didn’t have much sympathy for him, as the story progressed I felt the range of complicated emotions he has. This was one of the first stories I’ve read where the hero is a real person, not a mythical man capable of saving the whole world. Yet Brenden does become that strong Alpha male for Líadán, working to bring her a love she never thought could exist for her kind. I enjoyed the different elements of Líadán’s world and the way Ms. Jenson brings us a hot love story with real personalities. I recommend this story for those who like a different spin on the vampire genre of romance.
