Caroline Davis is a Senior Gemologist at a jewel creation lab. She’s got a ton of responsibility, made even more weighty by the fact that the company is in the middle of moving their operations. She sees to her end-of-week duties, and is closing the vault when her world explodes.

FBI Special Agent Kevin Connelly is first on-scene after his grandsire’s office complex is reduced to a pile of rubble. His preternatural instincts draw him to a survivor - a pretty young woman on the verge of death. There is little hope for her survival, but his honor demands that she be given the choice of life or death.

Merzi Ross’ Honorable Risk - Prequel: Alten’s Children gives us a peek into the creation and hierarchy of vampires. There are swirls of undercurrents here, tensions and formalities that must be learned and observed as Caroline gains the knowledge of who and what she now is. She and Kevin are bonded together by threads deeper than either of them can fully fathom, and Caroline makes a powerful enemy right off the bat even as she is accepted into the family. Quite frankly, I was hooked from the opening paragraph, and can’t wait to see more of this series as it unfolds.
