Creole Blues
Lucas Cortine is on the hunt for his runaway lover Brittney Massey, alias “Kat Boutie.” He hires Maitland, a bounty hunter known for getting his prey. Lucas knows he has to keep a close watch on Maitland however as the man has a tendency to go a little crazy around women and Lucas doesn’t want Brittney hurt.
Brittney is working at a diner in her hometown when Maitland appears. She doesn’t know what he’s there for, but when some goons try to grab her, Maitland comes to her rescue, quickly followed by Lucas. Brittney doesn’t want to go back to Lucas, but it looks like she has no choice. Lucas has to convince her that what she saw, Lucas murdering someone, wasn’t really what she thought.
Lucas is known as a notorious crime boss in the New Orleans area, but from the moment he set eyes on Brittney, his heart was lost forever. When she runs from him, he is hurt, but he also knows he has to get her back. He won’t lose Brittney and he’ll do whatever it takes to get her to understand who he is. As he tempts and teases her at his New Orleans hideaway in the swamps, Maitland waits for the chance to take Brittney back…for himself.
Creole Blues is the story of a man and a woman coming to terms with each other. Trust and the loss of it play a big role in this story and Ms. Adams accurately depicts the difficulty it takes in regaining lost trust. I wasn’t sure how to feel about Lucas at first, knowing the background of the character, but his love for Brittney quickly endeared him to me, despite some of the unconventional methods he used to “woo” her, including forced imprisonment, which isn’t always seen as the most romantic of wooing techniques. Nevertheless, I felt Ms. Adams managed to make this more palatable to the reader and what started off as a somewhat rocky relationship blossomed into a full blown, everlasting love. Creole Blues isn’t perhaps for everyone, due to the more cruel character of Lucas at times, but it is still a very strong romance when focused on the protagonists.
