Broken Wings
When horrifying murders are discovered among the Winged Clans, they are brought face-to-face with an enemy they thought was wiped out. Centuries ago, the Vulture Clan allied itself with the human followers of Cinder, the evil god of the Seven Hells, to try and wipe out the rest of the Winged Clans. A bloody war ensued and the defeat of the Vulture Clan was won. They were rounded up and put to death by the human allies of the other Winged Clans. The King also decreed that the children of rapes by the Vulture Clan were to be put to death.
Now, generations later, the Vulture Clan is back. With them they have brought the Bastard Breeds, the children that had been doomed to death but instead had been banished with the remnant of the Vulture Clan. Now the Winged Clans have to fight again, but not alone this time. This time they have a secret ally within the ranks of the Vultures. King Dearn gifts his trust to a Bastard Breed commander, Matte, and his heart as well.
I have never read a story that grabbed me so quickly. I’ve read everything that Lora Leigh has written, but she has far outstripped her previous books. Broken Wings was by far the best book that I have read all year. The world of the Winged Clans was so successfully rendered that it was easy to see the Fortress and the outlying aeries. Not only was the world well crafted; the characters were so poignantly portrayed that I found myself crying more than once during this book. The rest of the series was foreshadowed in this book and I look forward to reading about Matte’s brother Thorne. I cannot wait for the rest of this series. If this is an indication of what is to come from Cerridwen Press, I will spend entirely too much money there. Thank you, Ms. Leigh, for another fabulous series.
