  • Quirky Question of the Month

When it rains, why don't sheep shrink?

Because they don't fit in the dryer, so they're safely line-dried instead. Baa-aaa-aaa-aaa-aaa! ~ Titania Ladley

Obviously you're not from New Zealand (land of 10 sheep:1 person ratio) or you'd know that sheep are teflon-coated. I just went out and checked. Yup, the teflon's still working. ~ Nalini Singh

But they do! You know those fuzzy things you find in your belly button? Those are tiny sheep, blown there by the wind. ~ Lucinda Betts

Rain is a COLD rinse, dummy! And they lay flat to dry. ;-) ~ Bianca D'Arc

Well, in my experience, if the water is cold enough, everything shrinks and shrivels. ;) ~ Jacquelyn Frank

The aliens gave them invisible shields to wear. Didn't you know that? ~ Rene Lyons

I don't know, but from here on out, I'm wearing a ewe for a raincoat. ~ Ruby Storm

Because they forgot to pay their medical insurance bill. No shrink will see them. ~ Jade Lee

Who says we aren't ALL shrinking? Everything is proportional, you know? ~ Charlotte Boyett-Compo

Cuz it's cold water. ~ Kally Jo Surbeck

Now this is one of the best questions I've seen in a while. I don't know -- does anybody? ~ Karen Kay

Because no one can say "sheep shrink" really fast three times :)~ Karen Kelley

Because they wash with woolite. ~ Mary Winter

They do. That's why they say "Baaaaa," to puff themselves back out. ~ Mechele Armstrong

Sheep are pre-shrunk at the factory. (Just like Hanes sweatshirts.) For the few that evade that process, rain is cooling. Everyone who has laundry as their responsibility knows that cool water reduces shrinkage. You don't see any sheep in the humid tropics, do you? That's because years ago even the pre-shrunk ones got rained on hard in the wet season and shrank into hard wool balls. The pounding ferocity of the rain increased the rate of shrinkage. At least that's the theory I ascribe to. The debate still rages over whether they then got knitted up by the local grandmas or became the object of children's games and kicked into oblivion. This controversy is still the topic of numerous doctoral dissertations in tropical animal husbandry, BTW. A few archeologists have waded into the fight, but their contributions are mostly speculation since wool generally doesn't survive in the tropical archaeological record. A few temple carvings may be interpreted as ancient sheep, but they might also depict fluffy clouds with faces in them . Or bakers overtaken by huge, billowing batches of bread that went too long before they were punched down. Either way, tropical sheep may well be nothing more than myth. ~ Liddy Midnight

Because they repel water. Just smell a sheep paddock and you will know they never bath! ~ Maggie Nash

They don't get wet. Wool contains a natural grease called lanolin that helps keep out water. ~ Michelle M. Pillow

Because they don't use a dryer, they air dry. ~ S.L. Carpenter

Because they always lay flat to dry? ~ Sahara Kelly

Who says they don't? Has anyone actually checked? ~ Erin McCarthy

Reader Question & Answers from May

    What's your favorite genre?
I would have to say Regency is my fav. There's just something about that era that I love to read about. Maybe it's the men, they were bad and oh so cool. There were a few women that didn't fit the norm of times. - Earlene G.

When I read a historical romance a few years back, I knew I found a genre that was so rich and fastinating to read. Then recently with the paranormals, I've enjoyed many vampire and werewolves. So with this, I love when they have a historical vampire (Regency Vampire Romance, for example). So its putting two of my favorite genres together. It makes great reading! - Cathie

Congratulations to Earlene G. and Cathie who won an ebook of their choice from Rosa Romance Publishing!
