  • Quirky Question of the Month

If the #2 pencil is the most popular, why is it still #2?

Because #2's job is to be the runner-up, and since #1 got demoted after being caught writing naughty things with its big old piece of "wood", #2 did its honorable duty (thus making it more popular) and ascended the throne…against Donald's wishes. ~ Titania Ladley

Because being in the top spot makes you a target for the tabloids. #2 has all the power without the pressure. ~ Nalini Singh

It started dating Brad Pitt. ~ Lucinda Betts

See, they're just not fast enough. They couldn't get the lead out. ~ Bianca D'Arc

Well duh, because the PEN is number one. Everyone knows THAT. ~ Jacquelyn Frank

It used to be #1 but got tired of all the responsibility. ~ Rene Lyons

Because if it was a #1, it would be a pen. ~ Ruby Storm

TRADITION!!!! (Sing it with me now all you Fiddler on the Roof fans!) ~ Jade Lee

Because the #1 pencil is ONLY for top people and only top people know where to buy it. ~ Charlotte Boyett-Compo

I think it's trying not to hurt #1's feelings. ~ Kally Jo Surbeck

Okay, this one made me really laugh. Cause when you're number 2, you stress out number 1. ~ Karen Kay

Because it can't get the lead out. Karen Kelley

Because the pen is #1, and since the pen is mightier than the sword, the pencil got scared and decided to remain #2. ~ Mary Winter

Because being number is too much pressure. ~ Mechele Armstrong

It's number 2 because it was the second attempt to produce the perfect pencil for general use. You don't see Number 3s around, do you? No, that's because the second try came out exactly as the designer intended. I think they left the number at 2 because it shows the world that if you don't get it right the first time, keep trying. I'll bet you never realized you were holding a bit of inspirational propaganda in your hand in the form of that #2 pencil, did you? ~ Liddy Midnight

Good question. Maybe because the #1 is out of print... ~ Maggie Nash

#1 has better familial connections and a trust fund. ~ Michelle M. Pillow

The #1 pencil is enshrined in the Pencil Hall Of Fame and has his number retired so nobody else can use it. ~ S.L. Carpenter

#1 refuses to retire until he has a fully-funded severance package. ~ Sahara Kelly
