Talking With the Dead
Michael O’Rourke finds little meaning in the living. His life is filled with the demands of the innocent that died before their time. His vision is comprised of the dead seeking retribution, justice from their killers. Michael attempts to bring what peace he can, but at personal cost to himself. When he goes to Mitchell, Indiana for a vacation, he is hoping small town life will grant him a reprieve, but even small towns are not free of death.
Shiloh Walker is a talented storyteller. I am truly impressed by what she has managed to convey in this short story. There is not a moment wasted or a scene that will not have you anxiously turning pages. Talking With the Dead is rich in characters and images. Ms. Walker evocatively demonstrates the power and people that are a constant in Michael’s life. She manages to portray their emotions and the toll such a “gift” has on Michael. Readers will empathize easily with the characters. The tension surrounding the murders never falters and the story offers a variety of perspectives that had me riveted to this tale. I enjoyed the progression of the investigation and just how they arrive at the murderer’s door, with the finale being beyond anything that I could have imagined. Brilliant and definitely a recommended read.
