Melodi's Tune

As Melodi sits watching the sunset she hears a haunting song played on a flute that calls to her, when it grows so loud she covers her ears, she realizes its in her mind and faints. When she awakens she realizes that quite a bit of time has elapsed and there is Darien Stewart just driving up the drive way and she watches him get out of his car. She's here to write her dissertation and to house sit for her friend. After talking to her friend Judy to find out why her brother showed up, she worries about the loss of time, it was one thing to lose herself when she was doing research or was at an archeological site, but this was different. Finding out that Darien was here to recuperate and that he's heard the same song, Melodi decides to go talk to her friend Joe Larkfeather and see if he could help them.

Darien doesn't understand why they would hear the same song or why he doesn't want her seeing Joe by herself, he goes with her. After explaining to Joe what they've been hearing and seeing, Joe tells them he will talk to his grandfather who is the shaman for his tribe and see if he could shed some light on what was happening. Darien doesn't believe in what Joe is saying about Glooskap the Trickster trying to reach them and walks out. Calling Joe that night to apologize, Darien is told not to leave Melodi alone, to stay with her, that something was going to happen and that Joe and his Grandfather would be there in the morning. While sitting in front of the fire and talking, they hear the melody again and it draws them back in time to when Melodi was Little Raccoon and Darien was Walks With The Wind, to the fate that awaited them in the past and in the future.

Karin Huxman has written a haunting tale of betrayal, love found, lost and then found again. The author draws the reader into a world of when life was simpler, but also one of survival. If you're looking for a novel that can capture your imagination and keep it in a world that is brimming with realism, hope and dreams, then look no further. You care about these characters and you can feel the emotions that swirl around and within them. I hope the author will write more on time travel and the American Indians, as it shows she cares for both. 5 Angels
