Oceanbound
Maelan is a Merman who lives with his race in a vast city beneath the ocean. Mermen and Mermaids are inquisitive creatures, which is sometimes their downfall. Maelan’s parents died while exploring a wrecked ship, leaving him and his four sisters alone in the world. Tragedy strikes Maelan again when his sisters are captured by a fishing boat and killed. Sinking into a great depression, Maelan seeks to join his sisters in death and swims to the surface. He is captured by a small fishing boat but kept alive. His prison is a small tank, large enough for him to submerge in, but giving him no access to the ocean he loves.
Caera Geddes is the daughter of the fisherman who captured Maelan. She is left in charge of the ‘demon’ while her father and brother fetch the local archbishop. Caera is restless living in outback Scotland with no modern amenities, and very little supplies. Maelan brings excitement into her life and when she discovers he can talk just like a human, she sets about finding what else the merman can do. Maelan sees Caera as a good chance for him to escape; instead, they find love, overcoming the obstacles Caera’s father sets in front of them for the traditional romantic happily ever after.
Oceanbound is a lovely story of a couple overcoming prejudice and ignorance to find love together. If you ever wondered how Mermen had sex, Lacey Savage shows you how, and wow, Maelan knows just what he is doing. The scenes where Caera jumps into the tank to make love to her man are hot, and I needed ice. Ms Savage shows us how fear of the unknown leads to misunderstanding and prejudice, and the story in Oceanbound is a great analogy to what couples of mixed race or religion face in the real world. I enjoyed this book, and I would recommend it to anyone. I will be looking for more of Lacey Savage in the future.
