Veronica is a beautiful, educated, smart, and loving black woman who has had major man problems. Her current boyfriend, Kevon, is a user who thinks too much of himself, and takes Veronica for granted. She has decided to break up with Kevon, and does so just in time to meet and be attracted to Bryan, a white man. He is a junior architect who is unsatisfied in his job, and his love life. After a couple of false starts, Veronica and Bryan hit it off and begin to date. Will their relationship survive society’s racial prejudices?

I really liked this story. The two main characters are interesting and just plain nice people, and the reader gets to know them very well. The author has used an unusual style in this novel – the story is told by alternating chapters in the first person by the two main characters. A first person viewpoint enhances the intimate feeling of a narrative – the reader knows what the protagonists think and feel because she is hearing it from the characters’ own mouths. There are very sensual and moderately explicit love scenes in this story, but they are truly that – love scenes between two people who have deep feelings for each other. As a reader, I find that emotionally fulfilling. There is not a lot of suspense in this story, but that didn’t matter to me. I enjoyed following along and watching Veronica and Bryan as they discovered each other and grew closer, both emotionally and physically. I heartily recommend this novel as a pleasant read when you want to feel good about life.
