Lawyers in Love - In His Own Defense
Kristine Granger is a junior staff lawyer in the state attorney’s office in Tampa. She is prosecuting a drug kingpin of the city on a possession charge, but only has circumstantial evidence. However, she’s going to give it her best shot, because she wants to avenge her sister who died of a drug overdose at the age of 16. The kingpin’s attorney is Tony Landry, a very successful defense lawyer who Kristine considers “the enemy.” Tony is a man who, as a child, pulled himself out of the gutter and made something of his life. He knows that many of the people he defends are guilty, but he also defends the wrongly accused. After Landry successfully gets the kingpin acquitted, Kristine runs the gauntlet of reporters and, while trying to get away from them, falls in front of Landry’s vehicle.
The thing I appreciated most about this novella was its depth of characterization. Both of the protagonists in this story are more than one dimensional, which makes for a much more interesting story. Each has had a difficult past and is dealing with that history as best he or she can. By the end of the story, each has matured and now sees the world unobscured by the self-centered perspective of childhood. There are several explicit love scenes with male/female sex between a loving couple.
The story is told from both the heroine’s and the hero’s viewpoints, comparing and contrasting their thoughts and motives. The story is fast-paced, and carries the reader effortlessly along while skillfully developing the different threads of the story. I enjoyed reading it very much. After all, how can one resist a series titled “Lawyers In Love”?
