Ms. Hayes has allowed readers to feel first firsthand the emotions of both main characters. The plot never falters, and the use of the first person telling enables readers to see the development of the action through two different goals. The voice of the characters is very bold. The author does not spend a lot of time developing the setting; instead it is developed through the actions and emotions of the characters. Readers can feel the stark existence and struggle to survive. As the events in the story unfold, readers will feel the determination of the characters as well as the hope that somehow freedom will be won. The love scenes between Tor and Spark mirror the evolution of their relationship. Initially the scenes are tender, but as their passion and trust mount the intensity of their lovemaking increases. Readers will appreciate the honest sensuality that is displayed between these two. The final scene is well told and manages to display the love, humor, and grit that distinguish these characters
