The debut novel in the new series by Lilith Saintcrow is a compelling, action filled story.

Rowan has kept her skills a secret. Within the haunted minds of her patients, she will let her gifts out, but to the rest of the world she is simply a nurse. However, when her curiosity leads her to an abandoned house and into contact with the Society, her world will never be the same. Soon her life is filled with the compelling need to stay alive and reach the sanctuary of the Society’s hidden complex. Her guide and savior is the enigmatic, Delgado.

Delgado, “Del”, can’t believe Rowan has no concept of the level of power she has within her. Having experienced the brutality and agenda of Sigma, he hopes to spare anyone from their clutches. However, with Rowan his desire to save her becomes much more personal. Something about her calms the darkness that lives within him. Will they be safe one they reach the complex, or will the lure of Rowan’s powers may be too great for Sigma to ignore?

This was a phenomenal read. Readers feel as if they have literally been brought into another world. So complete are the descriptions and character development that this story takes on a life of its own. The perspective of the book enables readers to experience first hand the emotions both Rowan and Del are feeling. The storytelling abilities of Ms. Saintcrow are wonderful. The plot moves fast with action and danger around every corner. There are emotional moments where readers are confronted with the grueling battle that is fought behind the scenes between Sigma and the Society. The psi usage is well told, defined, and makes the scenes much more realistic. The emotional intensity of the story is compelling and implores readers to finish the story. Specifically, the connection between Rowan and Del displays a unique development that encompasses the varied emotions that cloud their relationship. The tension of the story is maintained throughout with the author injecting moments of humor, friendship, and passion into the telling to contribute to a comprehensive story. The ending was phenomenal and has this reader anxiously awaiting the next in the series.
