The Yellow Bordello
Way past the turn of the century, Sage, Wyoming still could boast the existence of a real live house of ill repute. However, when the last four ladies of the night disappeared, the house was closed. After years of neglect, the new owner, Echo Brennen is determined to prove that she is more than her ex-husband believed. She has put everything she has and everything she is into renovating the rundown building. The Yellow Bordello is going to be the best hotel and restaurant Sage has ever seen.
Rand Halstead came to The Yellow Bordello to restore an old mural. Even as he agrees to work with Echo on the painting of four women, his life takes many unexpected turns. He is drawn to Echo, has been since he was a teen, but unexpected events collude and place both Rand and Echo in danger. Can these two find a way, perhaps with a little ghostly help, to finally lay the past to rest?
The Yellow Bordello is one of the better ghost stories I have read in quite a while. The opening leaves readers wondering and is a great lure to keep reading. There are various subplots within the story that weave in and out of the seemingly main plot of Echo opening the Yellow Bordello. As the nuances of the various characters’ lives come together and an eventually impact all Echo has strived to create, readers will be hooked. I applaud Ms. Haynes’ ability to connect all the characters into the one storyline. The characters are not overly developed but definitely enjoyable. Echo and Rand are comfortable characters. Readers will feel like they are visiting with friends. The spirits within this book are immensely likable. They inject humor and eventually serve as a catalyst for an action filled ending. The ending is rich with style, I thoroughly enjoyed seeing these ladies finally find their peace.
