Born on the Fourth of July
Laura has worked for Jake for five years as his paralegal secretary. She finds him annoying and wonders why he is so successful, since his office is a complete mess, he drives a beat up old Ford and he has long scruffy hair. Despite all this, Laura feels an attraction towards him that is so strong she wonders how she has managed to hide it so well. That is, until this year’s fourth of July, when anger and attraction combine to produce some of the most spectacular fireworks Laura has ever been a party to. But do either of them have stronger feelings; feelings that could stop Jake from moving on to a better position in the city?
With this short tale, Marteeka Karland demonstrates that she knows how to write an erotic romance – and write it well. The sex scenes are well detailed and explicit, though not beyond the realms of what we ourselves would engage in. Whilst the focus is on the physical, the element of romance is also intertwined. These two characters have had very deep feelings for one another for years, feelings that each has repressed and kept hidden, until circumstances force each to consider, and reconsider, just what, or rather who, they want. The only disappointment I found about this story is its length. You will wish it were longer, since it’s so superbly written.
