Conception: The Others

Eden Lavery has experienced every conceivable kind of anguish and disappointment. The family that should love and care for her has used her, betrayed her, and conducted painful, debilitating experiments on her. Now in order to save her miracle child from the Coalition and their never-ending quest for immortality, she must find the one man who is strong enough to help her. She must find Dusan Knight, the man she loves, the father of her child and the man she ultimately betrayed.

As the leader of the Chosen, a race of beings with preternatural powers and the inspiration for vampire stories, Dusan is powerful and used to being obeyed. When Eden comes to him with a Chosen child and asks for help, Deuce can’t believe it. Believing her dead, he has mourned the loss of his mate, but now he will finally be able to complete their joining and bond with her…if he can convince her to trust him. But to do so, he and the Chosen, as well as their allies, the Others – werewolves of the Pack and werelions of the Pride – must protect them all from the evil brilliance of the Coalition.

Conception is a gripping tale of pain, betrayal, love and trust. Ms. McCarty does a wonderful job bringing these characters and their thoughts, fears and feelings to life. They are vibrant and realistic, evoking strong emotions throughout the entire story. Eden is a strong woman who has had to endure countless betrayals. When she finally finds Dusan, she struggles with his alpha male tendencies. I loved that although she’s been beaten down, she still finds the strength to do what she must. She loves Dusan and will submit to him at times but she’s also her own woman and gives as good as she gets. Their interactions and dialogue were witty and explosive. As for Dusan, can you say "super sexy alpha male"? His protective instincts are overpowering, but I really liked that about him. He was Chosen and made no attempt to hide his domineering personality. Together they must find a way to make things work between them. Finally, the storyline is one that will suck you in. I found this fascinating world of the Chosen and the Others one that I want to revisit again and again.
