Skin

Award winning actress Emma Sloan suffers burns over most of her body in an after show fire, and is transformed by a medical process, a skin implanted in her body which saves her life but changes her appearance so drastically she is not sure if she can handle it. Even the new shapeshifting and protective skin cannot help her when rouge "skins" escape from the hospital, killing all the doctors who had saved her life. Her only hope is Nicholas Archer, PR man turned crusader who struggles to save Emma from the desolate landscape and errant creatures.

Emma is held captive in several dangerous situations, where her skin sometimes helps and sometimes hurts her. Along with her fellow humans, she is forced to live in deplorable conditions while planning her escape from the symbiots Archer strives to kill.

Skin is a futuristic thriller that is heavy on medical intrigue like Robin Cook's novels and is also mired in sci-fi intricacies akin to films like Alien and X-Men. Emma is thrust into the role of real-life Mystique (the blue girl in X-Men.) Skin is big on sci-fi, though there is a dollop of a budding romance between Archer and Emma that slowly but surely pays off. An action-packed book, Skin’s only fault is that the constant trials could have been punctuated by more quiet moments here and there, but overall, an imaginative story that transcends the “romance” category while embracing it.
