A Twist in Time
In 1998, Judy Lambini, author’s agent, is traveling in England on a research trip with Carla, one of her authors. At the Laycock Inn, Carla discovers valuable documents that will prove invaluable for her book. Judy, on the other hand, is not really interested in history, so as Carla is working, Judy wanders over the surrounding hills, where the bonfires of Samhain are burning. Judy soon finds herself near the ruins of old Laycock Castle, and suddenly, feeling a strange, electric feeling go through her, she faints. When Judy awakens, she discovers that she is in the 13th century!
Judy is almost overrun by a horse ridden by Andrew Laycock, third son of the current Baron Laycock. They hate each other almost at first sight, and Andrew’s brother thinks Judy is a witch. Will Judy be able to get back to the 20th century? Can a modern woman adjust to the Middle Ages and find love with a knight? Luckily, she has a few modern comforts with her—she never goes anywhere without her tote bag, which contains her cell phone, her laptop computer, her cosmetics, aspirin...
This time-travel romance takes a slightly irreverent look at the 13th century through the eyes of a 20th century woman. Judy is unprepared for her jaunt through time, but manages to rise to the occasion and remember historical facts that she thought she’d forgotten. Andrew is a much more levelheaded character, who seems to have a very flexible attitude toward change. I thought the plot was believable and the novel well written, although the central section of the novel in which Judy attempts to act like a medieval lady slows the narrative down a bit. The brief love scenes are sensual rather than explicit, and are secondary to the overall plot. I enjoyed this novel, and think that aficionados of the time-travel genre will find it very satisfying.
