This is the story of Jeresa, a medical technician on Luma Six. She lives in The Zone – a area dominated by drug lords and criminals, and populated by the poor, the druggies, and the prostitutes. Jeresa is protected by her two intelligence-enhanced dogs, Gem and Star. Until she pays off her tuition loans, Jeresa is stuck working in The Zone’s medical clinics, where high security is required to protect the technicians from the patients.

Captain Axel Dane-Niallsen of the spaceship Nebula has a problem. His med tech just quit in favor of a job with one of the big shipping companies, and the dock master won’t let a ship take off without a med tech on board. Where will he find a qualified med tech within 24 hours of takeoff? Perhaps Jeresa and Axel can help each other?

Barbara Karmazin, author of Down Came a Blackbird, and The Huntress, once again demonstrates her superior writing skills in the realm of science fiction erotica. Though very short (approximately 25 pages), this excellent short story has a fully-realized and engrossing plot. This story is carefully written – in a story this short, every word must count, and the author has definitely accomplished that goal. The pacing of the story is very even, with the emphasis carefully balanced so that no aspect of the plot overpowers another. The characters are carefully drawn in the same spare style demanded by the format. The erotic scenes are very explicit, and feature sex with multiple partners in a loving relationship. I enjoyed this story, and look forward to seeing more stories taking place in this universe.
