Pauline Sokol's career choice is making her sick. She is drained from taking care of others and the demands of being a nurse, so she throws caution to the wind by quitting and vowing not to return to the field again. Her gorgeous, but alas gay, roomie Miles sets her up with an interview to work for a private detective agency and her great legs get her the job. But what has she gotten herself into? Her slimy new boss does not want her to work in the office he wants her out in the field - investigating! Clueless where to begin, Pauline needs all the help she can get and it arrives in the form of a tall, dark, and dangerous fellow investigator. Jagger is willing to assist her with her case if she in turn helps with his. Before she knows what hit her, Pauline is working undercover as a nurse investigating a string of fraudulent insurance claims. Pauline thinks this job should be a breeze until suddenly her coworkers are having accidents... of the fatal kind.

A Dose of Murder is a mystery written by romance author Lori Avocato, it is her first foray into the world of mystery and a promising beginning to a new series of Pauline Sokol- medical fraud investigator adventures. Pauline is a real woman with real thoughts, desires and faults. She does not always say the right thing or make the right choice; she is not always the most graceful in the bunch. She is surrounded by a group of colorful and interesting characters which make this tale come alive. From the mysterious Jagger, to her concerned parents and eccentric old uncle. Not to mention Goldie, a fellow investigator which mere words cannot do justice. Goldie must be experienced.

Although there is a little romance thrown in it is far from the focus of the story, in fact the biggest romance does not even include the main character, and as far as the main characters are concerned it is more romantic tension than anything else. I loved this story, it is smart and quirky and at times it made me laugh out loud. As this series continues, I plan to be first in line to ride along on Pauline's next case.
