Line of Fire

Chief of detectives, Adam Guthrie and defense attorney Faith Lawton usually find themselves on opposites sides in the courtroom, until a sniper’s bullet puts them both in danger; then everything changes.

When the man that Faith has just helped leave the courtroom a free man is struck down by a sniper’s bullet Adam has a hard time mourning his loss, but neither does he like vigilante justice. He is so sure that the sniper could target Faith next that he not only orders around the clock protection for her, he decides to take the responsibility upon himself.

Faith is not so sure that she is the target but she is not going to turn down round the clock protection from the man who comes VERY close to meeting all of her criteria for her ideal man. As a matter of fact, if it were not for the fact that they have different ideas of how justice should be served she would say that he WAS her ideal man. Even though a long-term relationship is not possible for them, can they resist the temptation of a fling when they are thrown together in a tense and very dangerous situation? Do they want to even try?

Line of Fire kicks off the brand new Code Red Continuity series from Harlequin. This series will tell the story of the people who work in the Emergency Services of Courage Bay California. Ms. Leto does a stupendous job of introducing us to the town and some of its residents, not to mention creating a sexy and heart pounding romance between two very unlikely people.

I absolutely loved this book for so many reasons. Ms. Leto’s signature steam comes through loud and clear, the story is straight from today’s headlines and could take place in any town in America. It is fast paced with more than a few surprises but the main draw is Faith and Adam. Though they are on opposite sides they never fail to look beyond the title to the person. What they share is very special yet they must fight to save their lives from someone who wants one of them dead. To make matters worse, they know that the biggest fight is yet to come because they will have to fight for their right to be together; they will have to fight their colleagues, the politicians and perhaps the very justice system that they both vow to uphold. Is the battle worth it?
