Tarnished Dreams

Can adolescent love outlast the pain of growing up?

Tricia McGill delivers a powerful and emotional story that had this reader remembering events long forgotten. Any woman who ever had a crush on an “older man” as a teenager will connect with this tale of misgivings and deep devotion.

Sally Franks is aghast when she realises that Mac has been sent to drive her home from the airport. Her stepfather was recently killed in a car accident, so Sally has flown from Melbourne to Tasmania to be by her mother’s side. Mackenzie “Mac” Boswell still has the power to take her breath away. He is tall and handsome. With his finely chiselled jaw and unique male scent, Mac will always be the one and only man she adores. So why is she acting so rude and abrupt with him? On the eve of her 17th birthday Mac had betrayed her trust and shattered her dreams. She has never forgiven him. The emotional wounds of rejection and betrayal she felt as a teenager have never left her. Days after the party, Sally left home, travelling to Melbourne to avoid facing Mac and refusing to hear his pleas of explanation. She has tried to move on with her life but has never been able to find anyone to compare with her first love.

As a teenage boy, Mac waited patiently for Sally to grow up. Even when she begged to be kissed he had to resist her advances for her own good. He knew that once he started loving her he would never be able to stop. When he came back home from university he had been excited to discover that his young love had finally blossomed. Mac could not wait for the night of her party. Unfortunately one silly misunderstanding had torn asunder the years of devotion. Mac now wants his woman back, but is she adult enough to look beyond her teenage pride?

Tricia McGill conveys so much teenage angst and extremes of emotion that one would believe she has lived through moments of this story herself. As a reader, I felt a real connection and empathy towards her character Sally. Her obsessions, crying on the bed and one-track thoughts are very true to life. Even the comments from some neighbours, when Sally returns to her childhood town, mentioning the obvious teenage attraction to Mac are now embarrassing but truthfully realistic. The challenge Sally faces, as an adult is a test of her newfound maturity. Her biggest obstacle is overcoming her youthful ideals and accepting Mac as the man he really is. Tarnished Dreams is a thought provoking study of undeniable love. It will definitely pull at your heartstrings. If you ever experienced the highs and lows of teenage love you must read this book!
