Grace Michaels leads a normal life. She’s a college professor and has lived in Cannon, Texas all her life for the most part. She likes the quiet life she leads, but when Cannon’s new police chief Ren Morello shows up, things go from peaceful to hectic in the blink of an eye. Not only does she feel an overwhelming attraction to the handsome alpha male, but she also proposes that they have a fling together! Ren is speechless. He knows Grace is the wife-mother-kids type of woman, not a woman to have a casual fling. He resists, despite his strong attraction to the curvaceous redhead.

But Ren isn’t the only shake-up in Grace’s life. Suddenly her ex-fiancé Darian is back and trying to persuade her to get back together, despite eight years apart and his infidelities. Then, Grace’s brother Gabriel comes home to help watch over Grace as she deals with Darian. The scariest thing that happens though is that someone breaks into her house, rifling through her belongings, searching for something. It’s not only at home, her office is also rifled through. Suddenly, Grace doesn’t feel safe anywhere, a problem that is compounded even more when someone pushes her down the stairs, knocking her unconscious. Ren’s protective instincts are on red alert and he’ll do whatever it takes to make sure Grace is safe; he just hopes he doesn’t lose his heart along the way.

What is really great about Grace Under Pressure is that the character of Grace is built around the caricature of a spinsterish, academic woman who has no need for a man and who loves her life the way it is. Well, Grace breaks every stereotype. She does want to marry, but she feels no man can see pass her more voluptuous figure to the woman inside. Not only that, but Grace is a real dynamic woman. She deals with not only ordinary pressures, but also more extraordinary pressures (such as the break-in) with aplomb and cool. Though scared, she doesn’t fly off the handle; she manages to take a deep breath and try to figure out what is going on.

Ren is also a great character. He’s the elusive divorced bachelor, the one who never wants to fall in love again, but with just one look at Grace and he can’t help falling for her. He takes his job seriously, but he takes Grace’s safety even more seriously, especially when he gets to know her and sees the special woman beneath the college professor veneer.

A charming secondary romance involving Gabriel and Grace’s best friend Julia keep the romance alive on every page. This was an extremely well written story that kept the laughs flowing, the chemistry sparking, and the tension high. Melissa Schroeder has penned a fantastic story and this reviewer can’t wait to read more by her. This is a Fallen Angel Reviews Recommended Read.
