The Cure - A Blood Tapestry
Dr. Chancella Tremaine has dedicated her life to unraveling the secrets of mortality. As a biologist, she has taken her research to the cellular level and quite possibly found a link between vampirism and cell mortality. Her research brings her notoriety and the interest of some unlikely individuals.
Valian de Mortenoire finds very little comfort in his existence. The chance to regain a semblance of humanity offers hope where there had been none. However, meeting Dr. Tremaine creates problems in his very structured life. First, the good doctor has qualms about using a real life subject to test her theory. Secondly, something about her shakes him from his complacency and has him feeling long buried emotions. Finally, as his past comes back to haunt him, Valian must not only protect Chancella, but decide how important the The Cure is.
Susan Phelan has done an excellent job combining the mythical elements surrounding vampirism with the scientific accomplishes of Dr. Tremaine. The author melds the ancient with the present into a cognizant, ever-evolving plot. The story predominately revolves around Chancella and Valian, but the secondary characters are an essential aspect of the story. Where initially it is hard for readers to grasp the disjointed actions of the various characters, Ms. Phelan eventually weaves everything together into this expansive plot. There are scenes written with frank brutality that lend credence to the author’s portrayal of the lust that consumes the vampires. These are tempered by the more personable scenes that enable readers to see the dimensions of their existence. The drive of these characters to accomplish their goals, however idealistic or self-centered they may be, is sure to keep readers engrossed. Overall, The Cure is a gripping read, filled with revenge, lust, and a desire for something more meaningful than eternal life.
