Midnight Angel
When Senior Chief Douglas Kowalski hears the voice of an angel at a jewel show he is attending, his heart stops. The voice is pure magic and it is coming from the most beautiful woman he has ever laid eyes on. Allegra Ennis is a redheaded music virtuoso and her talent attracts Douglas like a bee to honey. As he makes her acquaintance, he realizes that she is blind. Though Douglas can’t help feeling a bit sorry for her condition, he still wants to get to know her. As they spend the evening flirting and talking about music, it seems a true love connection is about to strike. However, in the blink of an eye, disaster comes when a group of jewel thieves takes the building hostage. Now Douglas, a former Navy SEAL, has to guard this small slip of a woman while making sure that the other people at the show stay safe.
Allegra has never felt such an instantaneous attraction to another man in her life. Douglas is charming and can discuss music, her passion, like no other man she’s met. He doesn’t even seem to mind her blindness, as he is more than willing to assist her throughout the evening. However, when he protects her life from a bomb, Allegra knows she will always have a lasting connection to him. But it is only after the danger at the event has passed that Allegra and Douglas get the chance to truly know each other. In the space of a few days, they tumble into love in a way that will make you sigh and tear up. Truly beautiful and touching, Allegra and Douglas are unforgettable characters and the stars of this story.
There is a suspense plot involving a man from Allegra’s past. The basics for his revenge are told in the beginning of the story so that it takes much of the suspense out of this story, but truly, you won’t be reading it for the suspense. You’ll be reading it to find out how Douglas and Allegra come to terms with their new found love.
Midnight Angel is the third in Lisa Marie Rice’s Midnight series and though the stories don’t have to be read in order, there are spoilers for the other two books contained in this story.
Emotionally fulfilling and very intense, the love between Allegra and Douglas bursts into life very quickly but what makes this story so stunning is that their love seems believable. All too often authors make their characters fall in love quickly, only to leave the reader slightly disconnected from the story because the supposed “true love” isn’t very true or very realistically portrayed. This is not a problem in Midnight Angel. Douglas and Allegra both have to learn to trust and rely on each other. They each have their own problems that they need to come to terms with, but they don’t let these problems distract them from their new found happiness. Not only does Allegra blossom in this story, but Douglas truly grows from a loner into a man accepting of his flaws, physical and otherwise, to a man who discovers the power of love. Love is not easy and I think this is the most important detail Ms. Rice conveys to the reader, and what in my mind, truly made this an outstanding story. She shows readers that love’s power comes from the fact that it isn’t an everyday occurrence but it is in fact a defining moment in one’s life. Gripping, sensual and engaging, Midnight Angel is one of those books that you won’t be able to put down until you’re done.
