Song of Unmaking

Song of Unmaking is the second book in this series and does need to be read in order. The first book, Call of the Mountain, is available from Luna Books. This review does contain spoilers of the first book, if you have not read it, please do not continue to read this review.

Valeria has saved the kingdom and kept the Unmaking from disturbing the Dance, but at what cost? After being forced to read a spell of Unmaking, a tiny bit of the Unmaking has rooted itself in Valeria’s magic. She has no one to turn to but her lover, the First Rider Kerrec. But Kerrec has his own problems, the healing that Valeria did is unraveling and the pieces of his magic are fraying. He can no longer see the patterns and doesn’t know if he can continue to be a First Rider.

The Mountain has put out its Call and amazing numbers show up for training. In hopes that the Mountain can be whole again, the training begins. An old enemy rears his head and the kingdom is in danger again. Euan and Gothard are banished, but not defeated and they have a new plan to overthrow the kingdom. Valeria and Kerrec must pull themselves together and do what they can.

When I was first introduced to the Luna line of books I was so excited. Here’s a line that was right up my alley, a fabulous story with strong characters. I picked up Caitlin Brennan’s first book and was blown away. The world that she has created is so unique that it boggles the mind. This second installment in the series has brought the characters that much closer to my heart. I cried with Valeria and hurt with Kerrec. I cheered on Briana, the heir to the kingdom, and hated Gothard. For an author to create such inspiring characters is a wonderful thing. I was very happy to see that Ms. Brennan sold another of this series to Luna and I hope that there are many more to come. There are so many outstanding secondary characters with their own stories to be told. Because of the unique plot and the strong characters I give Song of Unmaking a Recommended Read rating.
