Through a Crimson Veil
Mika has been sent on a mission that one of her kind would never have accepted. If she hadn’t seen her quarry, she would not have taken it herself. But just the sight of Conor McCabe sets her senses tingling. As a half-human, half-Mashei demon, Mika has the unique ability to cross the veil from Orcus to Crimson City. In search of an incantation that could enslave all demon kind, she finds Conor, the possible owner of the spell.
Conor is a freelance bounty hunter living in Crimson City. He’s also half Kiverian demon. Constantly fighting his demon side, he is a man torn by his hatred of demons. When he finds Mika, he fights even harder to believe that all demons are evil. Can these two souls find peace while fighting the darkest of demons, the Bak Faru?
After reading the fabulous 2176 series, I was so excited to see that Patti O’Shea was participating in yet another miniseries. And what a miniseries this has shaped up to be. Starting with Liz Maverick’sCrimson City, continuing with Marjorie M Liu’s A Taste of Crimson, Ms. O’Shea’s installation is a welcome addition to a wonderful line. This series takes place in the future where Los Angeles has become Crimson City. The vampires rule the skies, the werewolves the underground and the humans flounder between the two, trying to establish equality by dabbling with demons.
Ms. O’Shea takes on the intricate world of the demons, Orcus. The amazing culture that she has brought to life in Through a Crimson Veil is nothing short of awesome. The different castes of demons and the powers they have are so detailed that it was scarily believable. To be able to take an unbelievable concept and imbue it with such detail that it becomes ‘real’ is a true show of talent that ensures I will always look for Patti O’Shea’s books. Her ability to take characters and settings out of the book and into the plain of a reader’s mind is awe-inspiring. I feel like I’m fawning over her, but it really was that great of a book! Because of this, I do declare Through a Crimson Veil, by Patti O’Shea to be a Recommended Read.
