In the Flesh by Ethan Stone

In honor of my favorite genres here are my ten favorite mysteries or thrillers that I didn’t write.

1. Todd Mills series by R.D. Zimmerman
This series is one of the first I read when I discovered M/M. The first book, Closet, is about the death of reporter Todd Mill’s lover and his subsequent outing. The series follows Todd’s fall from fame and climbing the career leader again while navigating being out, and a romance with a police detective. All the books have well-written mysteries, and though the second book, Tribe, wasn’t as good, the following stories were all excellent. I wish Zimmerman would’ve written more.

2. Benjamin Justice series by John Morgan Wilson
This series are hard-hitting and angst-filled. Wilson throws more shit at his character than I’ve ever seen before. If you’re looking for an HEA these books are not for you, but if you enjoy a strong mystery with an incredible main character and excellent supporting cast I would highly recommend this series. Cristian Flesh was inspired by Justice, but I would never put Cristian through what happened to Justice.

3. Alex Cross by James Patterson

Life Under New Management by Jane Davitt

Course Correction

In any book, there are events that are only mentioned in passing. A book can only be so long. But a reader – and author – can still be curious about the details.

In Life Under New Management set in Vancouver, Ethan and Andy take a break from work at the Totally Five Star hotel and go hiking. This is what the book says.

They’d spent the day hiking in Mount Seymour Park, finding small patches of snow in shadowed corners, spring flowers studding the fresh green grass like scattered confetti. Andy’s legs ached and he was sure he had burned the back of his neck, but the view from the summit of Dog Mountain had been worth it, the city laid out at their feet in one direction, distant, cloud-wreathed mountain peaks challenging them when they turned another way.

Want to know more about the hike?

Carry the Ocean by Heidi Cullinan

Character Profile: Jeremey Samson

Jeremey Samson has just graduated high school and is meant to go to college in the fall, but he has no idea how he’s going to go. Though he hasn’t been formally diagnosed yet, he has depression and anxiety disorders. His life is in chaos and he doesn’t know quite what to expect yet—until he meets Emmet Washington at a neighborhood picnic.

    “You’re uncomfortable again.”

I was. I was starting to breathe too fast too, and I could feel my heart banging like it wanted out of my rib cage. I shut my eyes. Oh God, I was going to have a panic attack here, at the picnic. My mother would never forgive me.

“I—I have to…go.” I glanced around, realizing how many people had arrived, how close they were to me. My breath got shallower and shallower, and I wanted to cry. “I can’t get out of here. I’m trapped. They’re going to be so angry.”

“Will you let me help you?”

I blinked at Emmet, not understanding what he was saying at first. He still didn’t look at me, but he had his hand out, and he’d stopped rocking, waiting.

I put my hand in his. I don’t know why, but I let him lead me away from the tree, away from the picnic. He navigated me around some garbage cans at the corner of the house, parked me on a bench and sat beside me. He let go of my hand, and he left plenty of space between us. He said nothing, only sat with me as I took deep breaths and calmed myself down.

The Cowboy Enigma
By Demelza Hart

It’s the heat.

No, it’s the dust.

Actually, it’s the leather.

And the narrow, penetrating stare half-masked under the rim of the hat. And the creak as he shifts in the saddle.

Come to think of it, it’s all of the above, and more.

Cowboys. Can’t get enough of them. Tastes shift and mature, fashions falter, but the appeal of the cowboy seems to remain. I, for one, love a hard man in a saddle.

Hello and welcome. Pull up a cloud and get comfortable.

You live on two different continents! How did you meet?
H: On Twitter. Playing with The Original Sinners.
J: Yes. We were both fans of Tiffany Reisz’ series and we kept bumping into each other on Twitter while following her role players. Then we both started talking about maybe trying to write. Helena signed up for NaNoWriMo and so, of course, if she did it, I had to too!
H: We definitely held each other hands during that month and we both came out of it with a book!
J: *mutters* Yeah. I need to finish that one some day.
H: Yes. Yes, you do.

So, you were writing independently. What made you decide to co-write?
